dear william:- (doug v brown calling from MA-usa )
Thanks for your prompt reply....... It may seem that the majority of Vital and Historical Records Centers ,including the town libraries, don't give a damn about ones ancestors ,but most of them are not really staffed to do even a minor search-you have to ask them to point you to "the Room" and then dig in.......You noted that you have the US census-MA and I suggested the next step would be a search of the Melrose City Directories Anyhow, I've been there, and done that and I have good news that the George/Cora et als Life story and last known address are recorded there, which I have transcribed and printed below----My next step is to get Cora Ellen's death cert at the town hall and then George A.C.'s death cert. At this point it looks as if your Aunt Dorothy never married but lived at home with Geo/Cora and took care of them to the end, which was about 1951-1952 at 22 Howard St for George A.C. Knight and about 1961-1962 at the MacKenzie Nursing Home at 24 VINE St for Cora Ellen. As I get the data I will EMail it to you it will include cemetery, Church, and other VR's data- It seems that at 22 Howard St ,a Walter and Ida M Knight appeared at the time of your grandpa's death-- maybe a relative I would like to hear of some of your memories.....time permitting.......Of course there is possibility of getting a copy of GAC's will at the Probate Office in Cambridge Also any or all Deeds with your Grandparents signatures ................
P.S. -Geo and 3 children, Dot/Rich/William were ,I believe, all assoc with the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston,MA.......maybe a source of further data........hmmmmmm
Keep smiling.........

George Armstrong Custer Knight (Grandfather)
George Armstrong Custer Knight was born on the 28th of September 1876 in North Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont to Orris Pierre & Mary Haynes Knight, their sixth child and fourth son. George was named for General George Armstrong Custer, two reasons he was born 3 months after Custer was killed and George's father (Orris Pierre Knight) served with the Vermont 1st Calvary during the War of Rebellion, which was part of Custer's command. I have no information on his childhood, except that sometime between the 1880 census when he was 3 years old and the 1900 census (2 June 1900) (Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts) were he is listed as a single male (24) boarder in the household of Olin W. Marsh, profession, provision salesman he relocated to Massachusetts. On October 29, 1900, George married Cora Ellen Newcomb Richards in Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, Cora was born on the 1st of July 1875 in Pine Point, Cumberland, Maine to Daniel M. & Mary Ellen Newcomb Richards (not sure if ever married, there is a bit of mystery here). They settled in Melrose, Massachusetts and remained there for the rest of their lives. George was the operator of a meat business (butcher shop?) until sometime between 1920 & 1930 when he switched to the insurance business, in the 1940 census (2 April 1940) for Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, he is listed as an insurance agent, and in the Business Directories for the Melrose area in is listed as being an insurance agent into the 1950's. George register for the world war I draft on 12 September 1918, they described him as being tall, stout build, with hazel eyes and brown hair, with no physical defects, listed his home address as 102 Strafford Rd, Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and his business address as 83 to 85 North, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, owned his own beef business. I have found nothing to indicate he was ever in the military, at the time he registered he was married with three children. George Armstrong Custer Knight died on the 21st of October 1951 in East Derry, Rockingham, New Hampshire (no idea what he was doing there) of Cerebral Hemorrhage Arteriosclerosis, he was buried in the Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, his wife Cora Ellen Newcomb Richards Knight died on the 9th of March 1963 of Broncho-Pneumonia Virus Generalized Arteriosclerosis Senility and is buried next to her husband.

BABIES FIRST
Mr. Billings, in charge of Knight’s Market, states that, during the Sugar shortage our receipts have averaged less than 100 pounds a week. The policy that this store has followed lias been “Babies First”, “Sickness Next”. The “man in charge” has instructed and insisted that salesmen in taking orders for Sugar should determine as nearly as was possible whether there were babies or sickness in the homes; either being the case orders for Sugar were then marked “Babies” “Sickness”.
On arrival of Sugar these specially marked orders took precedence over all others, employees included, the remainder (when any) has been then fairly distributed. We have been made aware that many of the people in Newton and surrounding towns (whom we are serving to the best of our ability) do not know of our plan and feeling confident if they did, they will heartly join with us in our policy of ”Babies First.”
We appreciate that it is not by any mere chance that the “Man in Charge” is able to report the greatest Christinas volume in the history of this store, read into this fact what you may but to him it is the Strongest Possible Endorsement of his efforts to render a Particular Service to the people of the greater Newtons and surrounding towns, and will encourage and spur him to better endeavors ; many shortcomings we are aware of and have persistently been overcoming, those that still exist which in charity we request our patrons to note and report, that they may also be dealt with to the betterment of service. The Proprietor, G. A. C. Knight, joins with the ‘‘Man in Charge” in thanking the employees individually and collectively for the splendid team-work which made possible this report, also that every order was delivered on time without a hitch or a disappointed customer. Babies— Sickness— Sugar In our determined efforts to conserve the small amount of sugar that it has been possible for us to secure from time to time in the interests of The Little Ones and Sickness, some few have accepted our policy with a degree of skepticism, and we would, if possible, convince this number with our sincerity when this has not been possible and the loss of a customer has been the result, the grateful mothers of Newton and surrounding towns have more than recompense to us for any temporary loss of business. The Fullest Possible Values Every Day is the “lode-stone” that has attracted the numbers. The greater the numbers the bigger the volume, as volume diminishes the gross percentage for conducting business, the part you play should be ‘‘Buy Locally and talk it”; results: the merchant, it wise and in earnest, will reduce his merchandise in like proportion to his percentage savings.

SINCERITY OF PURPOSE All business has its limitation, governed principally by Time and Space. G. A. C. Knight realizing in December that the Parent Store had reached its limit, and in reality was experiencing an overflow, and as a further proof of his steadfastness of purpose to render “War Time Service” to the people of Greater Newton and surrounding towns, opened for their benefit the Service Market, 346 Centre Street. The Parent Store Service, backed by the loyalty of the people of the Newtons, has again in a few short weeks reached its limit. It Is Now “Up to YOU” People of Newton to do your part by assisting the business that is making herculean efforts to render a service to lit the times. While many arc cutting on delivery service we are this week adding a new order truck. BUT with a fixed plan in mind, whereby All May Help. Co-operation — Team Work — Pull Together by the people and producer that All may share alike in the advantages that this market offers by recognizing No Middleman — Willing and Able to place table supplies in the homes at the price the average merchant pays. Time Must be Gained if we are to care for the Numbers that are demanding to be served. Our delivery service is here plainly set forth. We mean to play no favorites, but will conscientiously live up to this schedule. On your part we are requesting that you anticipate your full orders Friday (when possible) for Saturday’s delivery, giving us an oppor- tunity to put up all groceries and dry vegetables in advance— the meats to be cut and dressed Saturday when completing your order. G.A.C. Knight's New Store – 346 Centre St. No. 303.
December, 1917. G.A.C. Knight Co. established the Service Market. 146 Centre St., in order to more efficiently care for the excessive demands the people on Newton and surrounding towns were making on the parent Store (or No. 1 Market). As anticipated many familiar faces and much good business followed the four “old guards” that were released to man the new store, - from that day of opening to the present time this branch has continued to make a splendid showing. The parent or No. 1 store, 302 centre Street is now reporting a bigger gross volume of business than at any period during 1917.

G. A. C. Every week new faces and satisfied customers are added to the numbers. Are you one of them?
