5 July 1901 (Friday)
Mrs. Abigail Ward Knight, widow of Rev. Merrick Knight, died at her home in West Hartford early yesterday morning, as announced in “The Courant.” Mrs. Knight was a native of Westford in the town of Ashford in this state, and was a cousin of the late Dr. Melancthan Storrs of this city. Her education was finished at Monson Academy, and June 10, 1852, she married Rev. Merrick Knight, a Congregational minister, and as a pastor's wife became endeared to many people throughout the state. Mr. Knight's first parish was in Chaplin and among the longer pastorates that followed were those at Hebron, Stafford, Broad Brook, Rocky Hill, Torrington, New Hartford and East Hartland. Upon Mr. Knight's retirement in 1890 they came to West  Hartford to live, where Mr. Knight died in 1896. Mrs. Knight was a woman of excellent spirit, well informed, modest, sagacious, and in her quiet and unobtrusive way made many friends who will revere her memory. Three sons survive, Rev. Edward H. Knight, professor in the Bible Normal College, Springfield, Mass., Dr. William W. Knight and Franklin H. Knight of this city. The funeral will be attended at her late home to-morrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. T. M. Hodgdon conducting the services, and the interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Dr. W. W. Knight, who was acting medical examiner during a portion of the day yesterday, went to No. 90 North street to investigate the cause of death of a child of Mr. and Mrs. Pasquale Faticato. Dr. M. A. Bailey had been applied to issue a certificate of death but as he had never seen the child alive he refused and the matter was reported to Medical Examiner Fuller, who requested Dr. Knight to investigate. Dr. Knight said yesterday afternoon that the child died in about twenty minutes after it was born. There was nothing to indicate that the child died from other than natural causes, Dr. Knight said.

Man Supposed to be John Schriprite of Meriden Found Dead
A man who is supposed to be John Schriprite of Meriden was found dead in a ditch close to the railroad track about an eighth of a mile this side of the Newington station about 7 o'clock yesterday morning. A Newington man discovered the body and Medical Examiner W. W. Knight of this city was notified. Dr. Knight went to Newington and examined the body. He found that the man's skull was fractured and it was supposed that he had been struck by a train early in the morning. The body was not run over and the only injuries were to the head. Papers found upon the body indicated that the dead man was Schriprite. There was a receipt from a Meriden clothier showing that $2 had been paid on an account the day before and his name was on an envelope of the Griswold, Richmond & Glock Company of Meriden, manufactures. The man was about 35 years old, was 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed about 150 pounds. He had light hair and mustache and was well dressed in dark clothes. The body was left in Newington for further identification. Up to a late hour last night no further information in connection with the case had been received by Dr. Knight.

“Assistant Medical Examinor”
The types yesterday, in account of Herrman's suicide, spoke of Dr. “McKnight,” medical examiner of Newington. Of course everyone knew that the reference was to W. W. Knight, the well known physician, who is called the assistant medical examiner of Hartford and who acts as such. There is, however, in name no such position and Dr. Knight was made medical examiner of Newington in order that he might assist Dr. Fuller in the work in this city.

Case of Theft Tried
Trial in West Hartford of Pearl Sperry and Mrs. Steel.
Pearl P. Sperry and Mrs. Grace Steele who were arrested at Westville, near New Haven, Saturday night by Detective McGrath and Frey of New Haven charged with statutory burglary and theft, were tried before Justice Franklin H. Knight at the West Hartford town hall inst. night. The prosecution was conducted by Attorney E. J. Garvan of Hartford and City Attorney Webb of New Haven, conducted the defense. The testimony brought out the facts that Mrs. Steele, who was formerly Mrs. Wheeler, kept house for John Pinney at a house owned by Linus T. Fenn on East street in September, 1898; that she subsequently left his employ and hired by Pearl P. Sperry, a saloon keeper of New Haven, to keep house for himself and mother. Mrs. Steele in company with Mr. Speery, went to West Hartford in September, 1899, and entered the house occupied by Mr. Pinney and took there from a trunk and articles of clothing belonging to herself, Mr. Phinney claimed that the articles belonging to himself to the value of about $12, were also taken by the accused, which was denied by them, Justice Knight bound the accused over to the next term of the superior court and bonds were fixed at $500 for each of the accused. William H. Killin of Hartford is the bondsman.

Collins is Not Guilty
William Collins, who this week obtained judgement in a civil action against Frederick E. Stanley and wife of West Hartford, for $62 with costs, and who was on Tuesday arrested on criminal charges made against him by Mr. and Mrs. Stanley, was tried before Justice Franklin H. Knight of West Hartford at Mr. Knight's office in the First National Bank Building in this city yesterday morning. There were three counts in the complaint. These charged Collins with malicious injury to cows on two different occasions last March and with breaking open a truck in the house of Mr. Stanley in April, John T. Robinson prosecuted the cases and John J. Dwyer defended Collins, Justice Knight decided that the state had failed to prove the charges and he found Collins not guilty.
