I was delighted to come across your web page recently, and it's a joy reading how far back you've got the family traced.  William Henry Knight (#982) was my great-grandfather, and I can give you some particulars about his descendants.

WHK and his wife (the former Kate Inez Baker) lived at their home in Adrian Township their entire married life--their home had already been in the family a long time, and still is today (it's now occupied by the Ruesinks, who also have a large farm across the road.  The house has been the scene of many births and marriages.  It received a "Centennial Farm" sign not long before WHK died.

Two quick ironies about WHK's birth and death dates: he was born 100 years to the day before my father died, and he died a mere nine minutes before my sister was born.

WHK & KIBK's elder daughter was not named Olive, but actually Alice Jane (8/16/1914-6/2/1983).  She went to Olivet College and was a public school teacher in Lansing.  She married John Bowlby Brattin (6/7/1915-5/6/1995), an attorney, and they lived most of their remaining years in East Lansing.  They had seven children, as follows: John David Brattin (11/25/1939-2/28/1981), Katherine Elizabeth Estes (7/14/1941-), Nancy Lu McMahon (10/18/1945-), CJ Burrell (10/13/1947-), Helen Louise Brattin (4/5/1950-), Stella Margaret Brattin (12/22/1953-), and Joel James Brattin (7/30/1956-).  I'm the second child of the late John David Brattin, and I'm married and have a daughter, Lydia Rachel Brattin (2/11/1998-).  Lydia's great-(x9)-grandfather is David Knight (1656-1744).

My aunt Katie is the family genealogist, and I'm going to be discussing some things with her soon in the hopes of getting more information, particularly of Alice Jane Brattin's sister Margaret and the latter's descendants.

All the best,

Vincent J. Brattin

Hello, again!

I should have some details on Kate Inez Baker soon; she was one of the earlier female graduates of UM, and I have applied to their Bentley Historical Library for whatever information they might have.

The family verbal histories have always said that she was seven years older than her husband, which would give a birth year of 1874; also, she was said to have been in her nineties when she died (June 4, 1965).  I understand that she and her husband may have swapped birth dates on their wedding license, because they didn't want to admit to such an age disparity in her favor.

If her birth year is correct, she was 34 when she married (October 24, 1908) and 40 when her first child was born, unusually late ages for that time.  Coincidentally, my wife predates me by seven years, was 34 when we married, and was 40 when our daughter was born.

Some other tidbits: Kate Inez first got to vote at age 46, and was always extremely faithful in voting thereafter, especially to counteract her husband's vote (he was a die-hard Republican; she a die-hard Democrat).  Her hair was down to her waist, and she brushed it with 100 brush-strokes every night before rolling it back up in a handsome bun.  She enjoyed very good health through her life (many were surprised that she didn't make it to 100); she began her last day as any other, and suddenly felt something in her chest.  She said to her husband, "Will, I think I'm dying," and laid down on the living room couch and died a moment later.

I have some photos of Kate Inez and other family members, and hope to get them scanned soon.  When I do, I'll send them along if you like.

All the best,

Vincent Brattin

OBITUARY: The San Bernardino County Sun
San Bernardino, California
23 April 1973 (Monday)
Charles E. Knight, 90, of 101 Dearborn St., Redlands, died Saturday in Loma Linda. He was born in Michigan and was a 65-year resident of Redlands. Knight owned a dairy in Redlands until 1918 and then was a partner in Model Creamery. He later sold his interest in the operation but worked at the creamery until it was closed in 1946. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include five sons, William H., of Filmore, Robert M., and Bruce E., both of Redlands, Paul E., of Grand Terrace, and Charles M., of La Crescenta; four daughters, Mrs. Marion E. Wood, of Fullerton, Mrs. Jean E. Stroud, of Encino, Mrs. Marjorie E. MacLellan of Brea, and Mrs. Lois C. Leonardi of Trona; 21 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Hillside Memorial Park under the direction of F. Redlands Daily Facts
Redlands, California

Charles Knight, pioneer resident, dies at age 90
Charles E. Knight, whose taste for work amazed three generations of his Redlands neighbors, died Saturday at the age of 90. The pioneer dairyman and citrus grower and a longtime director of major water companies, will be buried Tuesday at Hillside Memorial Park. His 2 p.m. graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Frank Toothaker, former pastor of the First United Methodist church. In which Knight had been a prominent member. A resident of Redlands, 65 years, Knight was founder and a durable employee of the Model Creamery. Before that he milked his own cows, then delivered their products by horse-and-buggy, defying the old farmers’ principle of dawn-to-dusk labor by stretching his days at both ends. Knight even came to Redlands the hard way, hoofing it from Michigan in a three-months trek with Clyde Holloway as his companion. Much of the time they worked their way west as harvest hands, finally reaching the coast of Washington, where they boarded a lumber steamer for the voyage to Los Angeles harbor. Thus Knight joined his father, William Henry Knight, who had sold a farm at Adrian, Mich., and became a Redlands resident in 1909. They started a dairy at Highland avenue and Redlands street, where Bruce E. Knight now resides. In later years Knight’s dairy was operated at Highland avenue and Dearborn street, and the tireless owner cultivated 20 acres of citrus property besides. When he sold his herd to Marigold Farms, he purchased enough milk to continue supplying his old customers. Knight and other milk producers combined their interests in 1917 and formed the Model Creamery, which operated for many years at 116 E. State street. Knight handled deliveries until the dairymen sold to a grocery group in 1943 and he was a noted example for night-and-day work, manager Emmett Osbun recalled.  For 40 years he was a director of the Bear Valley Mutual Water company, and he had been on the board of the East Redlands Water company more than half a century. Survivors are five sons, four daughters, 21 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Sons are Robert M. Knight, of Valencia drive; Bruce E. Knight, 131 S. Lincoln street; William H. Knight, Fillmore; Charles M. Knight, La Crescenta; and Paul E. Knight, Grand Terrace. Daughters are Marion E. Wood, Fullerton; Jean E. Stroud, Encino; Marjorie E. MacLellan, Brea; and Lois C. Leonardi, Trona. – Newspapers.com

Veteran Hartford Banker Dies While Visiting Buffalo
James H. Knight Dies In Bufflao
End Comes after Three Days Illness to First National Bank President
Tributes Paid By Many Business Men
Career Embraces Nearly Sixty Years of Banking History.
James H. Knight, for a quarter of a century president of the First National Bank, a director of other leading institutions and a long time member of the South Congregational Church, died at the home of Mrs. Edward K. Roberts, a niece of Mrs. Knight, at No. 645 West Perry street, Buffalo N. Y., at 5:50 last evening after an illness of three days. He left Hartford Tuesday evening to spend Thanksgiving Day in that city and on the train the next morning was taken ill shortly after breakfast. On arrival in Buffalo he was rushed to the Roberts home, where his condition gradually grew worse and yesterday morning was unconscious. The end came peacefully. Funeral arrangements are to be made today. Mr. Knight was born in Worcester, Mass., and obtained his early schooling in that city. He came to the First National Bank as messenger in 1863, when Edwin T. Tiffany was president of the bank and by dint of industry and faithfulness worked his way through various positions to cashier. In January, 1887, he succeeded the late Charles S. Gillette as president of the bank. The First National Bank was originally the Merchant and Manufacturers’ Bank and was chartered June 24, 1854, starting in a financially troublous year. It gained a foothold and in 1864 was renamed and changed from a state to a national bank, this being a year after Mr. Knight came. In 1863 the bank was located at No. 9 Central row. Its capital was $500,000 and its surplus was $40,000, when it changed its status. Within four years of the change a stock dividend was declared and the capital was increased to $650,000. In that time the surplus had grown to $400,000. The next year Mr. Knight saw the home of the bank changed to No. 50 State street, then known as the Trumbull House property. The old Hartford National Bank was next door to the east. Some years after Mr. Knight became head of the bank it was decided to buy the property in which the institution was located. The purchase was effected in 1895 and two years later the erection of the building which is its banking house and also an office building was begun. The new banking offices were occupied October 10, 1898. The building is a testimonial to the architectural taste of Mr. Knight as well as to his excellent judgment and consistent industry in banking, for it is among the most beautiful structures in the city, admirable in beauty, proportion and dignity in spite of a comparative narrow front. Mr. Knight had in mind an addition to its rear and only a few days ago informed “The Courant” that while the time was not it was approaching. Mr. Knight possessed by nature a conservative judgment and a disposition to investigate carefully from every angle before arriving at a decision and in consequence he was desired as a counselor by many carefully managed corporation, for several of which he at various times consented to act. At the time of his death he was he was president and a director of the First National Bank, and a director of the Aetna Ins. Co., and the Hartford City Gas Light Company. He was vice-president and a trustee of the Mechanics Savings Bank. Mr. Knight was given of outdoor exercise in his youth and was in later life fond of walking. For a time after coming to Hartford he interested in the Turnerbund. He was a member of the Hartford Club and of the South Congregational Church, with which he had a long been connected. In 1870 he married Miss Mary W. Gilman of Hartford, who died April 19, 1911. His home was made after marriage in the old Julius Gilman house at No. 6 Charter Oak Place. December 18, 1916, he married Miss Carrie E. Hills, a daughter of the late John R. Hills, who survives him. News of the death of Mr. Knight was unexpected. It elicited expressions of respect for his helpful and up-building services. The following tributes were written last night.
Treasurer Martin Welles of the Travelers Bank and Trust Company said: “In the death of Mr. Knight, Hartford has lost one of its ablest and most respected bankers. His long association with banking interests in this city gave him an intimate knowledge of financial conditions. His soundness of judgment and his wise counsel will be greatly missed. He was a man possessing the esteem and affection of all who knew him.”
President Frank C. Sumner of the Hartford-Connecticut Trust Company said: “James H. Knight was one of the best known banking men in Hartford. His sixty years’ connection with the First National Bank made his one of the oldest in his line of business. Meigs H. Whaples of Hartford-Connecticut Trust Company who came to Hartford in the same year, 1863, is the only one whose banking career is of equal duration. “Mr. Knight had marked ability and was universally respected for his safe and sane judgment. His dry wit and his vein of humor made him a most enjoyable companion. He will be sadly missed from his own bank, as well as from the many financial boards and other organizations on which he served. “In Mr. Knight’s sudden departure, I feel a sense of great personal loss, which I am sure will be shared by many citizens of Hartford.”
President Atwood Collins of the Security Trust Company said: “The death of James H. Knight comes as a great surprise to those who have been associated with him in banking circles in Hartford. While his term of service as president of the First National Bank had been long, his activities, physical and mental, were such that one did not think of any voluntary relinquishment of them. “My remembrance of him recalls his careful scrutiny of every investment or project submitted to him as a bank officer. “His was an unselfish service to his institution and it terminated as he would have wished, in the midst of his activities. Mr. Knight leaves many friends and a name which will be justly honored in our city.”
Megs H. Whaples, chairman of the board of directors of the Hartford-Connecticut Trust Co., said: “He was one of my earliest friends, a capable banker and a credit to his city. He served Hartford well and I am sorry to hear of his death.”
Alfred Spencer, Jr., president of the Hartford Aetna National Bank, said: “I have known Mr. Knight over thirty years and consider him one of the ablest bankers of the state, though very conservative. I feel his loss keenly.”
“He was a man of great judgment,” said George H. Burt, president of the State Bank & Trust Co., “and one of the best bankers in the city. He was respected by every one in Hartford.”
Leon P. Broadhurst, president of the Phoenix National Bank, wrote: “Hartford has lost a wise counselor in the death of Mr. Knight. His opinions were always sought in weighty bank matters and invariably his judgment was followed. Although he was of a retiring nature, his kindly deeds in a quiet way were many. He was always looked up to as an ideal by the younger bankers whose record they could copy with credit. - Newspapers.com

OBITUARY: Hartford Courant
Hartford, Connecticut
20 April 1911 (Thursday)
Mrs. James H. Knight
Mrs. Mary (Gilman) Knight, wife of President James H. Knight of the First National Bank, died yesterday at her home, No. 6 Charter Oak Place, of pneumonia, after an illness of ten days. She was 64 years old and was a native of Hartford, where she had spent all her life, being the daughter of Julius and Eliza (Shepard) Gilman. Mrs. Knight was a sister of the late George S. Gilman of this city and of General Julius Sheldon Gilman of East Haven, at one time a resident of Hartford, who died a few weeks ago of the same disease which caused the death of his sister. Mrs. Knight was married about thirty-five years ago. She had long been a member of the South Church. Besides her husband, she leaves two nieces, Mr. E. K. Roberts of Bridgeport and Mrs. Walter H. Clark of this city, and one nephew, George H. Gilman of Hartford. The arrangements for the funeral have not been made.
It will surprise and deeply grieve many hearts in many homes here, to learn, this morning, that after a short but sharp illness, Mary Gilman, wife of James H. Knight, is no more with us on earth. She fell asleep yesterday afternoon at her home in Charter Oak Place, where her entire life was spent, amid scenes tenderly associated with parents, sister and brothers who have gone hence before her, and still more tenderly associated with him to whom, in the beauty of youth, her life was united and thereafter devoted. Unblessed with children for her own, she took the children of others into her heart and home, and all the motherly in her found expression in her embrace, care and nurture of them. To those who, like myself, have known her almost from childhood, all words of praise seem alike, weak and superfluous. She was a creature of light and of delight. The sunshine seemed to belong with her. She was true and pure and good all through and through, most kindly among her kind, by nature most amiable, in manners most gentle and gracious. Deeply interested and actively engaged in all that pertained to the prosperity of the church of which she was a member for forty-eight year, her good ministrations went out in many directions beyond its bounds, and the sweet and salutary influence of her modest but positive character was far more penetrating and wide-reaching than the dreamed. In her home-now desolate except for her precious memory, she was supreme in a self-consecration all the more beautiful for her unconsciousness of it. Strength and beauty, truth and grace were in the sanctuary of her heart. This, from one who knew and loved her from the morning of her life until now when “it is toward evening and the day is far spent,” and memories are almost sweeter than hopes.
