  Thomas lived on the homestead, in the same locality where his grandparents settled a century earlier, and called "Birchard's Plain." Near by is the Plains Cemetery where the earlier Pembers were buried; some Pembers acted as Sexton for many years.
  The Estate of Thomas came to Probate Nov. 10, 1827. Oliver Johnson and Comford Filmore were appraisers.
  An old Bible which belonged to Lucius has a note that Rev. Dr. Nott was able to preach in 1848, at the age of 94; he had officiated at funerals of five generations of Pembers.

Theodosia FILMORE-7410 was born on 21 Nov 1785 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut. She died on 26 Jan 1832 in Franklin, New London, Connecticut. Theodosia married Thomas PEMBER-7409 on 1 Jan 1804 in Franklin, New London, Connecticut.

Morris, Ogle Co.; went to Oswego Co., N.Y., then to Jefferson Co., N.Y. and Oct. 6, 1855, came to Ogle Co.; married Apr 19, 1852, to Achsah Jane Davis, in Jefferson Co., N.Y.; she was born Jul 7, 1832, in Schuyler, Herkimer Co., NY; is a daughter of Richard Davis and Lois Eddy Davis; they have six children - Alma L., Bradford A. and Bradley J., twins - Herbert T., J. New Combination Atlas of Ogle County, Ill. (1872), Everts, Baskin & Stewart.  The residence of Joshua A. Knight is illustrated p. 62.  The photograph of the entire family taken after Achsah's funeral shows the same building.  Both Wilbur(52) and I believe that this original house was later moved south across the lane and was used by uncle Bob Talbot as a rabbit house. Although Achsah Jane was married when they arrived in Lynnville, a Richard Davis and a J. Davis owned farms adjoining the Knight's in sec 33 in 1862. By 1872 Joshua is the owner of the farm of J. Davis. A W. Eddy owned another adjacent farm in 1872.  Was he also a relative?  Achsah's mother was Louis Eddy. I have a note somewhere that her father was the first president of the Holcomb Bank.  J. Davis is probably Jenks Davis, Achsah's brother. His wife Nancy lived with the Knights and later the Talbots until she died sometime after 1919. HTK
It was in 1875 that the railroad was built through Davis Junction from Rockford to Rochelle and that Jeremiah Davis laid out the village.  The two-story school building was built in 1877 and the Methodists church was started in 1882. - Rochelle News, August 22, 1940.

Joshua Knight, of Ogle county, Illinois, once sowed thirteen barrels of salt on twenty acres seeded to wheat, and left a strip in the middle of the piece without salt. The ground on which he sowed the salt produced over eighteen bushels of spring wheat per acre, while that on which there was no salt was hardly worth cutting - the wheat being badly shrunken, injured by rust, chinch bugs, etc.

Mrs. Achsah Knight
Achsah Jane Davis Knight, a former resident of Jefferson county, died in Rochelle, Ill., Sept. 21. Achsah Jane Davis was born in the town of Schuyler, Herkimer county, N.Y., July 7, 1832. When three years old her parents moved near Lafargeville, Jefferson county, in that village she obtained her education and began teaching at the age of 15. She taught for nine terms. She was married to Joshua Angell Knight, April 19, 1852. In October, 1855, the moved to Ogle county, Ill, and located about five miles northeast of Rochelle.

Achsah Jane Davis Knight, a former resident of Jefferson County, died in Rochelle, Ill., Sept 21. Funeral services were held at the family home and at the Rochelle Methodist Episcopal church the following Tuesday. Interment was at New Rochelle. Six of her grandchildren were pall bearers. Achsah Jane Davis was born in the town of Schuyler, Herkimer county, N.Y., July 7, 1832 (to Richard Davis and Lois Eddy). When three years old her parents moved near Lafargeville, Jefferson county. In that village she obtained her education and began teaching at the age of 15. She taught for nine terms. She was married to Joshua Angell Knight, April 19, 1852. In October, 1855, they moved to Ogle county, Ill and located about five miles northeast of Rochelle. She and her husband joined the Methodist Episcopal church in Rochelle where for a number of years they were regular attendants. Her husband died April 1, 1883. Of the children living there are Alma L. Carmichael of Lindenwood, Bradford A., of Rockford, Herbert T. living hear Lindenwood, and J. Addison of Havana, Cuba. Achsah J died March 9, 1885, aged nine years eight months and 14 days. Bradley J. died Sept 7, 1887, a little over 31 years of age. There are also 21 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mrs. Knight has one surviving sister, Mrs. Roby Eddy Elwood, of Los Angeles, Cal., and one brother Thomas Jenks, of Chicago, Ill. - Find A Grave Memorial# 128768594

In 1896 he married Miss Helen A. Knight, who had been graduated with him years before from Mt. Morris Seminary in Illinois. The Pacific Christian Advocate summarizes his work of this period. Quoting freely from the edition of Nov. 10, 1909, "Together they worked on the Prosser charge, embracing a range of sixty miles. His wife often conducted meetings at one point while he was busy at another. They built a church at Prosser, a parsonage at Toppenish, beside many other notable efforts, leaving both charges free of debt.  They organized several Sunday Schools, and conducted many revivals. During this arduous labor his throat failed and he found it necessary to locate at North Yakima, Wash." Near North Yakima, Sanford built a large home and operated a splendid fruit farm until 1908, when his rapidly failing health brought his work to a close. A stay in Los Angeles failed to prove beneficial and after his return to North Yakima he died, Oct. 6, 1909. His wife, Helen, died Jan. 9, 1919. Both are buried in Tahoma Cemetery. It is typical of their attitude toward life that two eighths of their estate was bequeathed to the University of Puget Sound to found a loan fund for students.

BIOGRAPHY: Sanford Luther Burrill bought a photography studio and was able to make his living while getting his education. His first pastorate was at Sargenta Bluff, Iowa, where he stayed two years. He took his family to Walla Walla, Oregon [Washington], where he was a pastor. Sanford continued to have various businesses and pastor at the same time through the years. Business in Adams, Oregon became so bad that Sanford had to close his business, so moved the family to Harrington, Washington November 11, 1889. In the fall of 1889, Sanford's pastorate consisted of Toppenish, Washington, and various adjoining points. He was named Sanford, or perhaps Sanford L., and later assumed the middle name of Luther. "The Genealogy of Hugh Stewart" gives his middle name as "Lewis". He was known to his family as Sanford Luther and that is the name on his tombstone. Raised Methodist, Sanford went to Mount Morris, Illinois and attended the Rock River Seminary. In 1870 he attended Garrett Biblical Institute and graduated June 1872. Sanford was buried in the Civil War Veteran's plot with a big granite stone. After about two years, the ladies' auxillary hired an attorney and insisted the stone must be removed. However the casket was moved to a new plot of ground. In the winter of 1890, Sanford bought a farm "about seven miles northeast of Harrington on the road to Davenport. In the spring of 1901, Sanford bought a farm "about seven miles northeast of Harrington on the road to Davenport. In the spring of 1901, Sanford purchased property in Yakima - 10 acres from a Mr. Irish, and a 4 acres plot from Mrs. Ruth Cock. The family moved to Nob Hill in the fall of 1901. This home burned in 1924. In December of 1908, Mr. Irish invited Sanford and Helen to move to Long Beach, California. Sometime later they moved to an apartment in Pasadena. Sanford died at the family home on Nob Hill, in Yakima, Washington.

Notes from Lois Burrill Dean's family records indicate that Helen Knight and Sanford Burrill had known each other in college, and Sanford had proposed marriage at that time. Helen had declined, "as she had pledged herself to the support and care of her parents until they no longer had need for her." The renewed courtship was conducted by letter, with Helen living in Illinois. Presumably they married in Illinois before Sanford brought Helen back to Harrington.

Rochelle Man Passes Away Early Friday
Rochelle, April 12. – Herbert T. Knight, 88, a lifelong resident of Rochelle passed away yesterday morning about 5 o’clock at the St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. He was born in Rochelle, November 1, 1858. He was engaged in farming until he retired 30 years ago. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was a 50-year member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Surviving are two sons, Dr. Howard Knight of Elgin and Burton Knight of Rochelle; four daughters, Mrs. Flora Talbot of Rochelle, Mrs. Estella Holmes of Rockton, Mrs. Alta Johnston of Villa Park, and Mrs. Helen Partridge of Kinsman, O.; and one brother, Addison Knight of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church and burial will be at Rochelle. The body will lie in state at the church prior to the services. – Newspapers.com
