A Knight From Auburn
A Worthless Husband in Trouble in Hamilton, Ontario
A dispatch from Niagara Falls says: “William B. Knight, a commercial traveler, is under arrest here charged with bigamy on complaint of Gertrude Price of Hamilton, Ont., who is reported to be in a dying condition in that city from a criminal operation. Knight's other wife was Miss Anna Burroughs of Auburn, whom he married several years ago. When his second wife learned he had another living she refused to live with him, and finding herself in a delicate condition, resorted to an operation with will probably cost her her life.” The Knight above referred to was a former Auburnian and as stated in the dispatch was married to Miss Anna Burroughs of this city, a sister of James W. Burroughs, the printer, whom he deserted some years ago leaving her to support herself and two little children. Mrs. Knight was well known and for a number of years after her husband deserted her taught music to support herself and children. She was successful as a teacher of the piano. About three years ago she left for Lowell, Mich., where she is at present living and teaching music. Knight had done nothing to support his children. He has repeatedly feigned repentance but has made no effort to mend his ways. Mrs. Knight's friends in Auburn had not heard of his whereabouts in years.

Knight Still Held
Nothing Heard From His Second Wife – Fierce Minded Father-in-Law.
William B. Knight, the man arrested by Officer Griffin of the Ontario Frontier police at Niagara Falls, Ont., last week on the charge of bigamy, as noted in yesterday’s Gazette, is still in limbo on the Canadian side. Nothing further has been heard from his second wife, pretty little Gertie Price, who was reported dying from a criminal operation in Hamilton, Ont., hospital. Knight is a widely known commercial man who has been on the road a number of years past. He is 47 years old and married his first wife in Auburn. She was Miss Anna Burroughs and he lived with her in Auburn for a number of years. Domestic troubles caused her to leave him. The father of his second wife has brought the charge against him and says he will make him suffer dearly for wrecking his daughter’s life and forcing her to the step she has taken.

Knight Convicted
Judge Hill Gives the Bigamist One Year In Central Prison
William B. Knight, the commercial tourist arrested for bigamy, was tried before Justice Hill in Niagara Falls, Ont., today and convicted. Knight, it will be remembered, married Gertrude Price of Hamilton, Ont., some three or four months ago, when he had a wife living. The principal witness in the case today was Mrs. Ellen K. Burroughs of Lowell, Mich., Knight’s mother-in-law by his first wife. Mrs. Burroughs arrived last night from the west and was only too anxious to give the testimony which convicted her erring son-in-law. Knight was sentenced to one year in the Central prison at Toronto. Frederick Hill appeared for the prisoner.

The Auburn Argus - Auburn, N.Y. Friday, March 23, 1894
William B. Knight, former Auburnian, who married a sister of Mr. Burroughs job printer of this city, and afterward married Gertrude Price of Hamilton, Ont., was convicted Saturday and sentenced to one year's imprisonment.

BIOGRAPHY: The Syracuse Standard, Thursday Morning, February 19, 1885
William B. Knight and Anna M. Burroughs have been married some three years, and to them two children have been born. Until last Saturday they lived in a house in Cayuga street. They used a coal bin, it is alleged, so near that of their that of their  next neighbor that Knight found it easier to help empty the other than to keep his own full, and on Saturday he was reminded of this in a manner expressive. He agreed to settle for the coal taken in the past months and went to his place of employment, J. D. Simpson's Grocery, in Genesee street. Here he settled up his affairs, drew what salary he had coming, and then disappeared, since which time his whereabouts have been unknown. Mrs. Knight is the daughter of a most respectable family, and is left with little ones to battle for. Knight has always borne a good reputation. He was at one time collector for the Dispatch, and has held places of trust. He has lately been salesman in the grocery store of John D. Simpson. The latter says he has discovered no irregularities in Mr. Knight and believes him to be honest. It is said, however, that the family relations of the young man have not been pleasant, and that his disappearance is owing to this rather than to the alleged theft of the coal. Mrs. Knight has returned to the home of her mother.

An Abortionist’s Victim
Inquest on the Body of Gertie Price Concluded – An Arrest Follows
A Hamilton dispatch says: At a continuation of the coroner’s inquest into the death of Gertie Price of Niagara Falls, Ont., who died in the city hospital a few days ago, a nurse at the hospital named Bella Moffit, swore that deceased had told her that Mrs. Wollinng had performed an operation on her. Chief of Police McKinnon gave similar evidence. The jury brought in a verdict “that Gertie Price died from the effects of a criminal operation performed by Mrs. Wollinng.” Mrs. Wollinng was arrested.

Niagara Falls Gazette, Saturday Evening, March 31, 1894
Mrs. Wallinng Acquitted
In Hamilton Thursday Mrs. Wollinng was arraigned at the police court on a charge of attempting to procure and abortion on Gertie Price, the Niagara Falls, Ont., girl who died at the hospital in that city. The crown attorney said the evidence did not justify him proceeding with the case and he agreed to an acquittal. The arrest of Mrs. Wollinng was based solely on a remark made by the deceased girl to a nurse in the hospital. There is some talk of Mrs. Wallinng taking action against the coroner for committing her to jail on the evidence adduced at the inquest.

In March (1883) of the following year, Mr. Agar and his two daughters, Jessie and Minnie, and Mr. Holmes and his family left their Oneida, New York, home with all their belongings and started for Dakota Territory on an excursion train. They met up with M. B. Knight, who was also headed for Dakota Territory and G. W. Everts, an Ohio man, who promised to join in the development of the new town by starting a weekly newspaper. Mr. Agar planned to build a hotel, and with such broad ideas as making that town a county seat and expecting that one or more railroads would be built through the town, no wonder enthusiasm ran high among the newcomers.

During the first week in April, 1883, Charles H. Agar, with the help of M. B. Knight and several other first settlers, constructed the very first building on the lot where the Onida Bank is now located. This building served' as a lodging place for the land-seekers. Almost every evening several teams of newcomers would arrive from Blunt and want a night's lodging. One evening, in the early part of April, several teams drove up and John N. Garner, W. E. Garner, Romeo Garner, Thomas Gibson And William H. Shepherd asked if they could stay for the night. They had their own supplies and cooked their supper. Work on the building had been pushed and the interior was in fairly good shape when Mr. and Mrs. Joe McDonald took possession of the new hotel about May 1st.
