Family Sketches Pt 3
WOODS, Gilbert Allen, was born in Richland, July 5, 1813. His grandfather, Koffrel WOODS, born in Belfast, Ireland, about the year 1745, was a linen and cloth manufacturer. He married an English lady and came to America with Burgoyne's army, his wife and family following later. John, the oldest son and father of Gilbert Allen, married at Paulet, Vt., Sarah WAITE, and moved to Richland about the year 1806, being among the first settlers of this section. During the War of 1812-14, he was engaged in furnishing and moving supplies for the armies at Oswego and Sackett's Harbor and intermediate points and being a man of great energy and force rendered valuable assistance. He had a family of eleven children, ten sons and one daughter; all but one of these were living when he died. Gilbert A., subject of sketch, was the fifth son and born on the farm where he now resides. He was educated in the common schools of the village of Pulaski, after which for many years he was engaged in dairying in connection with manufacturing and many other enterprises in the village of Pulaski, among them wagon and carriage manufacturing, milling, linseed oil manufacturing and others. He was on the originators, owners, and builders of the Syracuse Northern Plank Road, was for many years president of the Pulaski Bank, is a member of the congregational Church, and has been one of its most liberal supporters for the past sixty years. For may years he was on the Board of Education of Pulaski, has been highway commissioner and president of the village. He still resides on and manages the farm on which he was born more than eighty-one years ago. May 11, 1837, he married Martha Williams CHEESEBROUGH, daughter of Henry and Sarah (WILLIAMS) CHEESBROUGH, formerly of Stonington, Conn. She is a lady of high culture, was graduated from the best schools of that day, and unselfish helper in all good works. Her ancestry goes back for seven generations in an unbroken record to William Cheesebrough, who came over from Boston England, with Governor Winthrop to Boston, Mass., in 1630. Her grandfather was a colonel in the Revolutionary War and her father an adjutant in the War of 1812. She is a member of the Congregational Church. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Woods, are William C., Henry G., Caroline E., Sarah E., Phoebe E., John G., Edwin W., Allen E., Charles C., of whom William Allen and Edwin are deceased. Henry G., is a merchant of Halifax, Nova Scotia; Caroline E., married William H. BENTLEY of Pulaski, N.Y.; Phoebe E. married Horace A. MARRIAGE: Utica Daily Dispatch - Saturday Evening August 26, 1911
$2,000 for Wife to Leave Husband
Mr. and Mrs. Knight Agree to Separate
In City Court To-Day
Husband Said He Can Get All the Money He Wants and Finally Agrees to Pay Wife $2,000 if She Will Separate From Him.
A breech in the domestic relations of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Knight of 81 Brinckerhoff avenue was considerably widened this morning and if the couple do not break the agreement they promised to enter into in City Court this morning the couple will live apart and Mrs. Knight will receive $2,000. Knight was arrested on a warrant secured by his wife charging him with being a disorderly person. The information contained in the on which Knight was taken into custody charged him with willfully abandoning and deserting his wife and leaving her without means of support. Judge O'Connor after hearing the stories of the parties said that City Court was not the proper place to bring the matter and suggested that a suit for separation might be instituted.
"I've wanted her to have a separation." said Knight, "and I offered her $3,000 if she would secure one."
"One thousand you mean" retorted Mrs. Knight. Well I'm willing to make it $2,000" said the husband, and Mrs. Knight agreed to accept it.
The marital difficulties of the Knight's dates back several months, according to the statement of the wife when she appeared against her husband this morning. She said that for six months Knight has been keeping company with people whom she did not approve of and that he spent but little time at his home. Knight explained to the Court that he could get all the money he wanted and that he objected to his wife being at work. This brought from the women the sharp retort that in order to have what she wanted she had to work. She said she was neither an extravagant women nor an unreasonable one and that she was willing to perform her part of the marriage contract if he would. Knight smiled at her remark as if it pleased him. Both are intelligent good looking and well appearing. Knight said he had a fine home at 81 Brinckerhoff avenue which he owned. The couple have lived in Utica about three years. Knight admitted this morning the he had not followed any particular line of business steadily during that time. His business has been outdoor advertising he said. It is stated that Knight has received large sums of money from a relative in Rochester and that it has not been necessary for him to work. It is said that he has told friends of his in this city that he will some day come into a fortune of $100,000. When Judge O'Connor told Mrs. Knight that there was nothing that could be done in the case in City Court and that she would have to institute an action elsewhere, the woman said that she had gone about the matter in the only way that suggested itself to her. She said that she had done all that she could and that she had decided to see if the law could help her. She said that she was a stranger, practically her and that to all purposes she was alone, none of her relatives being in the city. She told the Court that it would have to take her word for what she said as she had no witnesses. "I am not out with the same kind of people," she said with a look of distain toward her husband. "and therefore cannot prove what I am saying about him. But the people he goes about with are bad." she said. Knight remarked easily that inasmuch as she had started the thing and had him brought into court it was up to his wife to prove her assertions. He said he had provided her with a good home, which brought from the wife the remark that it was both difficult and unpleasant to sate one's appetite for good food with brick and plaster. Judge O'Conner asked the women if she had not been able to secure what she wanted on her husband's credit. She replied that she had never started to charge things and that she did not believe in it anyhow. She said that she knew that her husband got all that he wanted and that he found it more to his pleasure to spend his money on those with whom he associated away from his home. The couple left the court room in opposite directions. Unless they change their minds it is expected that papers in a suit for separation, with an agreement by the husband to pay to his wife $2,000 will be drawn.
