Well Known Citizen Dies In Salem Hospital
D. E. Knight Passes Away – Old Resident and Was Prominent In County.
D. E. Knight, father of Mrs. R. D. Allen of this city, died at the Salem Hospital Friday morning. Mr. Knight was born in the state of New York on February 29, 1832, and emigrated to the lumber regions in Michigan in the early fifties, where he engaged in the logging business. In January, 1878, he moved with his family to this county, locating at Silver Creek Falls. He leaves surviving four daughters and a son, namely: Mrs. Lydia Smith, residing in California; Mrs. Della Kelly, Mrs. Myrtle Hollingsworth, residing near Sublimity; Mrs. Hattie Allen of Salem and Fred D. Knight of Silverton, Or.; also one brother, J. A. Knight, the present city recorder of Woodburn. His wife, Mrs. Emma Knight, died in this city about one year ago. Mr. Knight had been suffering for the past two years from diseases incident to old age, and his demise has been expected by his immediate family for some months past. About three months ago he was removed to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Allen, in this city to enable him to receive medical treatment. On last Tuesday his condition became so critical that it was necessary to remove him to the hospital, where everything possible was done for his relief, but it was found that life was fast departing from him and that the end was near. The remains will be taken to Silverton this evening, where the funeral services will be held next Sunday.

On August 21,1943, in Detroit, Bob married Jeanne (Knight) Kyselka. Bob was fun-loving, always quick-witted, clever, and very likable his entire life. A nickname that has stuck with him through the years, from his days in the Kingsley-Summit City area, is the 'Honorary Mayor of Summit City.' Growing up in the Summit City-Kingsley area, Bob was active and had a lifelong love of sports. He played on the Summit City Independent Baseball team when he was 10 years old, and before graduation in 1941, he played basketball for four years at Kingsley High School. From 1943 to 1948, Bob bought, owned and operated a general store in Fife Lake called Kyselka's Grocery & Meat. While living there, he helped organize a baseball team, and for Sunday entertainment, they invited other sandlot teams up to Fife Lake to play. Bob moved to Traverse City in 1949, where he was an LPN and a unit supervisor at the Traverse City State Hospital, retiring after 32 years of service. He bought property that is now the Holiday Inn and enjoyed living near the water, and he coached in the Traverse City Babe Ruth League. Bob was a member of the FOE Aerie #383, Elk's Lodge #323, and the American Military League (AML), all in Traverse City, and the State Employees Retirement Association. In addition to baseball, Bob enjoyed bowling, pool, hunting and fishing. He was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs particularly, and collected various baseball memorabilia, especially concerning the Tigers. He was an avid euchre player, playing in many tournaments with his wife, and had a lifelong love of Country Western music and dancing with his wife. One of his favorite local bands was Agnes & The Polka Dots. A great accomplishment in Bob's life was traveling with his family to all 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, and Europe. He is survived by his wife Jeanne; three children, Roberta Kyselka-Sarkis and her spouse, Gary Hoover, of Clinton Twp., Luana Jeanne Kyselka, M.D. and her spouse, Dr. Michael Patt, of Bloomfield Hills, and Kyle Kyselka and his spouse, Peggy Sue, of Gilbert, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, David Sarkis, Marisa Patt, Minda Patt, Amy Patt, Seth Kyselka, Lars Kyselka, Hans Kyselka and Sven Kyselka; one great-grandson, David Sarkis II; one brother, James Kyselka of Fife Lake; and Bob's lifelong friend, Phillip Bowden. Bob was preceded in death by a son, Dominic George, in March of 2000.
