Whitman Harvey KNIGHT [Parents] [scrapbook]-2318 was born on 15 Dec 1839 in Sandy Creek, Oswego, New York. He died on 22 Jul 1904 in Clay County, Kansas. He was buried in Appleton Cemetery, Clay County, Kansas. Whitman married Mary Francis JONES-2319 on 17 Jun 1863 in Utica, Oneida, New York.

BIOGRAPHY: I'm not related to these people, but I thought you might find the
following interesting. It recently appeared in Washington, Kansas's weekly newspaper:
Washington County News

W. H. KNIGHT descended from one of three brothers who emigrated from England to America. The youngest one had a son, Joshua, whose son was Hezekiah KNIGHT. He became the father of Whitman Harvey, born Dec. 15, 1839, at Sandy Creek[,] Iswego County, New York.  Harvey attended Rock River College in Mount Morris, Ill., and graduated in 1858.  He spent three years teaching in that area.  In 1863 he married Mary F. JONES whose parents were David and Ellen JONES.  Harvey and Mary had Children: Burton, Alfred, Edward and Clara. Harvey and his two brothers were raising hogs, two to three hundred head, until the hogs caught cholera and all died within a week. At that time he decided to go west. In 1869 he rode a horse and joined a wagon train to look over the country.  When he got to the Big Blue River in Kansas he turned around and rode back to Illinois. The following year (1870) he, Mary and the four children, came with a wagon train to Kansas. In the same train were Harvey's brother, David and wife; Mary's brother, Frank JONES and his wife; and Mary and Frank's mother, Ellen. The wagon train came to Westport Landing (KC) and traveled west along the north side of Kansas River, then north along the east side of the Big Blue River.  Grass was so tall that a man rode ahead of the wagon train a carried a pitchfork full of hay above his head so the wagon drivers could see where to follow. They followed the Big Blue River to the Nebraska border before crossing it. Then the wagon train broke up, David KNIGHT and some of the other families went into Nebraska to settle. Harvey did not want to settle there as Nebraska had capital punishment there and he did not approve of hanging. Harvey's family and the JONES family came down to the site of the first Kimeo.  He homesteaded 160 acres in Section 28, Frank JONES homesteaded 160 acres adjoining to the east and Ellen JONES homesteaded 160 acres on the south. As soon as Ellen proved her claims, she gave it to Harvey with understanding he would take care of her the rest of her life. For the first two or three years after coming to Kansas, Harvey taught school. In August 1871, he was ordained in the Congregational Church and became the first preacher at the Fact Church in Clay County. During the summer, Harvey and Frank JONES freighted.  They took wagons to Westport and loaded sugar, flour, coffee, cornmeal, dry salt pork, etc., and joined other wagon trains hauling supplies to Dodge City. There they sold their supplies and loaded buffalo hides, which they brought back to Westport Landing. There they loaded supplies and medicine for themselves and neighbors and headed back to Kimeo.

June 6, Albert P. Knight, a deaf mute, who was for sixteen years a teacher in the Central New York Institute for Deaf-Mutes, was killed by an eastbound express car on the Utica and Mohawk Valley railway.

The Utica Observer, Tuesday, June 7, 1904
DEAF MUTE KILLED BY A CAR
Died While On The Way To St. Lukes Hospital
An east-bound express car traveling at a high rate of speed on the Utica & Mohawk Valley Railway hit a deaf mute just west of Orinkany about 7:23 last night and injured him so badly that he died before he reached a hospital. The victim was Albert P. Knight of 402 Roberts St., Rome, formerly a teacher in the Rome Deaf Institute. Of late he had sold lead pencils and court plaster and was quite well known in Utica. His remains were taken to Casidy's. The express car No. 600 was in charge of Motorman John Atkinson and Conductor Harry C. Young. The accident was witnessed by the motorman and Earl Leonard night operator at the Orinkany sub-station. These men say the car went past the sub-station at full speed; that as it reached the curve the power circuit breaker, the power was shut off altogether. The motorman saw a man walking west on the south side of the east-bound track and a safe distance from the speeding trolley. The witnesses say the man was looking downward. The motorman waited, so he says until the distance between the car and the man was comparatively short before he began blowing the whistle and try to slacken speed, The man still kept looking downward and the car whizzing along. As it reached the west end of the highway crossing the man walked toward the track and brakes were applied. Just as Mr. Knight stepped upon the cattle guards the car hit him and rolled him many feet. The car was going fast because it could not be stopped for some distance. The witnesses say that the car went the distance between to poles before it came to a standstill. Mr. Knight was picked up by Earl and the motorman and word was sent to Dr. F. H. Peck, who started for the scene and met the car at the halfway bridge. It was intended to bring the injured man to St. Luke's Hospital, but he died before reaching there. Coroner Dodd was called and will hold an inquest. Mr. Knight earned his living by selling lead pencils, court plaster, etc. and was well known in all places of business in Utica. He was well educated and was formerly a teacher in the Central New York Institution for Deaf Mutes. He was about 41 years of age and was born near Bath Can. When he was hit he carried a number ferns and some strawberries which he had evidently just picked. In Mr. Knight's pockets was a testimonial from J. G. Dorrance, president of the First National Bank of Camden to the effect that he was a man of good habits and good reputation. His physical infirmities limited him in his work, Besides his wife, who is deaf also he leaves four children, E. Charles Knight, Miss Belle, Walter and Edward Knight all of Rome. All the children can talk and hear.

BIOGRAPHY: Saint Lawrence Republican, March 9, 1892
Mrs. Knight, with her daughter and son, whose husband is a teacher in the school for mutes in Rome, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. L. S. Robinson. Mr. and Mrs. Knight are both mutes and have five children.

The Plattsburgh Sentinel, March 30, 1894
Castle of Silence
Prof. Albert P. Knight, who has been a teacher in three different institutions for the deaf for twenty-eight years, has lately visited the Northern New York Institution for deaf mutes at Malone, N.Y. He was well pleased with everything which he saw there. He states that the daily routine at school is interesting. The teachers of both sexes officiate in the chapel in succession every morning just before the classes assemble in their school rooms, and the pupils seem interested in the religious illustrations or stories based on some verse from the Bible or something else the teachers may choose. Almost every pupil there is taught to speak as well as to use the sign language and to write sentences in answer to questions or on given words in almost all the studies which hearing children use; and also compositions on any given subject. The classes work in shops and attend school alternately every day. The teachers always look pleasant to their classes, thus making them feel happy and at home. The spot on which the institution is situated if full of pure air and good health, being on a hill at the foot of the Andirondacks. Every visitor from the adjoining counties, such as St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Clinton and Essex as well as from different parts of Franklin county, find it to be so and praise the exercises of the classes highly. Mr. Knight recommends it to the parents of uneducated mutes living in these counties to send their children to that institution. He intends to find mutes in Northern New York for the Castle of Silence. - Gouverneur Free Press
