The enclosed records cover:  The Stockwell Family: The Singletary Family: The Creeley + Brown Family; The are carried back as far as the imagrant ancestor as far as possible & as these date back about three hundred years in most cases you can class yourselves as coming from the old original puritan stock, However I have not as yet been able to find any Mayflower ancestors, but as all of  these are from Mass. It is quite possible that we may find some  pilgrim fathers yet.

OBITUARY: The Homer Republican
Homer, N. Y., Thursday, December 22, 1881
Obituary
In Homer, December 14, 1881, Joab Knight, aged 97 years, 9 month and 8 days. Also in Scott, September 23, 1870, Rachel Knight, wife of the above, aged 79 years, 10 months and 21 days. The subjects of the above notice were both born in the town of Cranston, Providence county, Rhode Island, Jonathan Knight, the father of Joab Knight, was a staid farmer in comfortable circumstances, and also a Baptist minister, who according to the custom of those times, preached on Sunday and labored on his farm during the week, living within his income and laying up a little for a rainy day. Joab was the oldest son, who after many vicissitudes in teaching school, clerking, coopering, farming, mechanical work, etc., and concluded in the year 1814, being then 29 years if age to emigrate to “York State.” He accordingly purchased a horse, saddle and bridle, and a pair of capacious saddle bags in which to carry provisions and a little clothing, and started on horseback for what was then called the West. He arrived safely in the town of Homer, and made his first stop with Mr. Thomas Salisbury, or Major Salisbury, as he was always called – an old acquaintance of his who was then settled in Cold Brook, in the north part of the town, with whom he boarded for some time. He soon purchased an entire lot of land, (640 acres) known as lot 95, in the south-east part of the town of Scott; not an acre of which was cleared, for which he paid $1,250. His father assisted him some in paying for it. He remained in the country about four years, boarding a time with “the Major,” but living most of the time by himself in his “log house,” working by turns at coopering and clearing land. He then returned to Rhode Island where he remained about two years, making preparations for the final removal to his new home. During this time he was married to Miss Rachel Fisk, with whom he lived till 1870, when she died, preceding him by eleven years. He got a pair of oxen, and an “ox wagon” most of which he made himself, and covered it with cotton cloth; and with this outfit he started with his family, about the 20th of November 1820, for their Western home. They took their own provisions for the journey simply “lodging” at the “taverns” overnight. Such a journey at such a time must have been somewhat fruitful in incidents and adventures which we have not space here to notice. Here, however, is one specimen. On one occasion his oxen resolved that they would not, under any circumstance, cross a certain bridge, and no amount of persuasion, gentle or otherwise, could induce them to change their determination. But our pioneer was not to be foiled in any such way. Accordingly he unhitched them, turned their heads towards the wagon, fastened the end of the tongue to the yoke and in that way backed them over the bridge and continued their journey. They arrived at their destination after being on the road twenty-one days. During his former sojourn in this country Mr. Knight had erected a log house with one room, on one side of his farm, which was now occupied by Mr. William Gillett – a brother of Judge Gillett. He and his family went into this house with Mr. Gillett’s people where they lived a year or two, when he built another log house in a more central part of his farm. The house had two rooms and a stone chimney in the center with a fire place in each room. One room was occupied by the family and the other was used for a cooper shop, where Mr. Knight continued for several years to make “potash barrels” by odd spells and thus capture an occasional six shillings. He also manufactured nearly all the furniture for the house, plain stools serving for chairs, and other things in proportion. Prominent among the articles of furniture was the old loom with its accompaniments of swifts, quill wheels, warping bars, etc. In the meantime the clearing of the land and bringing it into cultivation so that they could produce their own breadstuffs, meat, vegetable, wood and flax, involved an amount of hardship and privation of which we at the present time can form but a feeble conception. Luxuries of every description they knew only by hearsay. The price of produce – if indeed, they had any to sell was also very low and most of the time had to be sold for barter. Potash, or salts, was about the only article that would sell for money, and in obtaining the ashes for its production many a dark night was illuminated by the flames of their burning log heaps, while the proprietor would labor with might and main to keep them going and secure the ashes when they were burned down. While this was going on outside, Mrs. Knight was busy with wheel and loom making woolen and linen cloths with which to clothe the family and have surplus to sell. The amount of labor which she performed in this direction in addition to all her other labors was truly marvelous, but an iron constitution and indomitable will enabled her to perform it. Thus by unyielding perseverance, hard work and economy, they won the battle and secured a home, and in 1832 they moved into their new frame house, which is still standing and occupied as the farm house. Mr. Knight sold off portions of his land at different time to other settlers, so that at the time of his death he and his son together held but 194 acres of the original purchase. Mr. Knight was a man of determination who was bound to get a living and get it honestly. He always intended to earn every dollar that he got and always “paddle his own canoe.” He had no genius for speculation, was entirely destitute of dash, and was extremely modest and unassuming, never crowding or elbowing other people out of the way to get the front seat himself, so that whatever success he attained was his own beyond a doubt. He was always interested in political affairs and used to write much on those subjects, but never was an aspirant or schemer for office, and his extreme difference and modest prevented him from attaining to much distinction as a political leader, although he understood the true principals of government and the policy of parties better than the majority of those who were called leaders. He was an ardent Republican from the organization of that party to the time of his death. He was never connected with any church or religious organization though he was naturally religiously inclined. Was always moral, upright and exemplary in character, and was much interested in theological investigation and wrote much on the subject. He was independent though not at all aggressive in asserting his opinions, and never took any man’s theories or any dogma of the church upon trust, but insisted upon their being rationally and philosophically demonstrated. In middle life he became acquainted with the doctrines of the New Jerusalem Church as taught by Emanuel Swedenborg, and by reading his works in connection with the Bible he became convinced of the truth of those doctrines and held to them while he lived. If all that he ever wrote on political and theological subjects had been published in would have made several volumes, but a very small portion of his writings ever got into print. He would sometimes show his manuscripts to a few of his friends who would read them and that would be the end of them. In fact the greatest defect of his character was his lack of self-assertion and his excessive difference and timidity which prevented him from exerting that degree of influence in society to which his natural endowments justly entitled him. He had for many years, an extensive correspondence, and to some extent seemed to choose this means of communicating his ideas, rather than by the press. Mrs. Knight was woman of remarkable energy and strength of character. In her youth her educational advantages were extremely limited – a defect that she felt all her life, but she made the most of the little education she had, and in her were developed some of the most sterling qualities. She had a natural capacity for business and worked with most persistent application and energy, while her prudent management and watch-care were one of the chief props of the household. She made no enemies in the community, and was indefatigable in her efforts to promote the happiness and welfare of her family. Indeed she was one of those noble mothers of whom we sometimes feel like saying, “We never shall see her like again.” Her memory will remain forever fresh and green in the hearts of those who knew her best. She was in short a consistent, faithful, Christian woman.
