Knight,Philander,p.o.Homer,Farmer,owns 197 acres, born in Scott in 1823,was Justice of the Peace, wife,E. Louisa Burdick; married in 1845, one child living,Arthur L. Eldest child, Josephene Louisa, died when three years old. Father Joab Knight came into the county in 1814 and died in 1881. Philander Knight was one of those uncompromising abolitionists who voted for James G. Birney for president in 1844, and continued the warfare against slavery till it was dead and buried beyond the hope of resurrection. He is now battling as ardently for the prohibition of the liquor traffic; for the home against the saloon, as he ever did against African slavery, and expects to continue the fight till the home is triumphant and the saloon  is forever banished from his native land.

MARRIAGE: Cortland Standard, Cortland, N. Y., Monday Evening, June 18, 1928
Miss Knight Bride of J. H. Johnson
Dr. C. W. Scovel Performs Ceremony in First Presbyterian Church
The marriage of Miss Lucille Elouise Knight of Cortland to John Harold Johnston of Ridgewood, N. J., took place on Saturday afternoon, June 16 at 4 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church of this city, the ceremony being performed by the pastor of the church, Rev. Carl W. Scovel, D. D. A perfect June day favored the bridal party in providing a beautiful setting for the wedding. Friends were assembled at the church shortly before 4 o'clock, many of them having come by automobile from Ridgewood and other places where the bride and groom have a wide acquaintances. The church had been decorated by the Arnold florists of Homer and was charming in its array of palms, peonies and gladioli. Miss Carrie D. Halbert, organist of the church, presented a most appropriate and pleasing program of bridal music preceding the ceremony. At the hour of 4, the organ swung into the strains of the Lohengrin wedding march and the bridal party descended the north aisle toward the altar, where Dr. Scovel, the bridegroom, and the best man, Robert R. Johnston, awaited them. The four ushers, Edward Johnston, Edward W. Barbehenn, J. Lorton Francis and John G. Hubbard, all of Ridgewood, were followed by the maid of honor, Miss Gertrude Joslin of West Roxbury, Mass., and Ridgewood, N. J., and the matron of honor, Mrs. Albert Durkee of Homer, who were gowned in pink georgette with broad brimmed hats and carried arm bouquets of pink roses. The bride proceeded on the arm of her brother, Dr. Hubert C. Knight of Syracuse and was most attractive in her gown of white chiffon, with her tulle veil caught in a cap over her hair and adorned with orange blossoms. Her shower bouquet was of white roses, accented by a few pink roses which gave a touch of color to the beautiful white costume. Miss Knight was given in marriage by her brother, Dr. Knight and the Presbyterian ring service was the solemn and impressive ceremony used by Dr. Scovel in the plighting of the marriage vows. The organ rendered a soft accompaniment during the service. With the joyous march from Mendelssohn's “Midsummer Night's Dream,” the wedding party left the church, adjourning to the church parlor to receive the felicitations of the guests. The parlor had been made festive for the occasion by a profusion of Junes flowers. After congratulations, refreshments were served, Mrs. A. H. Swartout catering. The bridal group, numbering 16. was seated at the bride's table which was decorated in pink and white and the guests were served from a buffet table on which pink and lilac colors prevailed. At this table Mrs. Frederick R. Thompson and Mrs. Edward D. Bodgett of Cortland were honor ladies and poured coffee. A small table in the center of the room was especially prepared to hold the bride's cake, surrounded by lighted candles and flowers. Here the bride performed the pretty ceremony of cutting the cake for distribution among her guests. Before the departure of the bridal pair, motion pictures of the group were taken on the lawn. The bride's bouquet was thrown and was caught by the maid of honor, Miss Gertrude Joslin. With a change to traveling clothes, Mr. and Mrs. Johnston stepped into a waiting car in front of the church, and with the customary shower of confetti and paper ribbons, sped away on a trip which will take them to Nova Scotia and other points in Canada. After July 15th they will be at home at 46 Woodside Avenue, Ridgewood, N. J. The bride is the only daughter of Mrs. Lulu E. Knight of 22 Reynolds Avenue. She is a graduate of Homer Academy, 1916, Cortland Normal School, 1918, and Cornell University, 1922. Since 1922 she has been general secretary of the Y. W. C. A. of Ridgewood, N. J., a position in which she has been both effective and popular. Mr. Johnston is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnston of 8 Orchard Place, Ridgewood. He was graduated from Rutgers University in 1920 as president of his class, and he is a national officer in Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He is a member of the New Jersey State Cabinet of the Y. M. C. A., and an elder in the West Side Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood. He is a director and officer of the Phillip Ritter Co., Inc., advertising agency of New York City, and secretary of the Leopold Schepp Foundation. Among the guests from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. John Johnston, Robert R. Johnston, Edward Johnston, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Johnston and three children, Robert Johnston, Mrs. Lewis Kennedy Mr. and Mrs. James D. Craig, Miss Margaret Fanchert, Miss Elizabeth Morey, Miss Gertrude Joslin Miss R. Jane Abbott, Miss Julia B. Plumb, John G. Hubbard, J. Lorton Francis, Edward W.
