OBITUARY: Broome Republican, Binghamton N.Y.
Thursday, August 18, 1892
Death of Mrs. Cynthia J. Knight
The death of Mrs. Cynthia J. Knight, at age 92 years, widow of the late Stephen L. Knight, occurred at her home in Conklin, Monday Aug. 8th. She came to Conklin from Providence, R.I. with her family in the year 1838 and had resided there until her death. She has seen this beautiful valley of the Susquehanna changed from almost a wilderness into a land of railroads and churches, of fertile fields and happy homes. At the age of 15 years she became an earnest Christian. Her faith and trust never faltered, and when the summons came calling her to a higher life, she saw not the grim messenger but lifted her eyes with cheerful, happy trust to Him from whom the message came and passed as quietly away as a weary child to the land of dreams. Five years ago this month her husband departed this life. The had been married sixty-eight years. Of their family of eleven children seven survive her, of whom Mrs. R. L. Gibbs of Wisconsin, Mrs. G. R. Wheeler of Williamstown, Mass., Mrs. J. O. Campbell of Conklin, N.Y., and Mr. H. C. Knight of Waverly, N.Y. were in attendance at the funeral.

Captain Ennis Church, Regimental Surgeon
9th Michigan Infantry, U.S.
Captain Church served as regimental surgeon to the sick solders that cold winter in West Point. For most of the green troops, this was the first time away from home. Wet ground and freezing temperatures made life in the camps miserable. Few of them knew how to make a proper bunk of straw or rails. The many hardships combined with the less than ideal sanitary conditions proved too much for many of the men. A measles epidemic struck the camps and many of the men developed pneumonia as a complication,  in all, 61 men died and were buried on the hill to the south of the fort. The people of West Point opened their homes to these sick men. During this bleak period the Ditto-Lansbury House, on the Northeast corner of  4th & Elm , was pressed into service as a military hospital. It was ironic that in many instances the mothers, wife's, or sisters of the confederate soldiers  who were off fighting for the south were kindly nursing the Yankee Soldiers back to health. Dr. Geoghegan and Dr. Fletcher of West Point assisted Captain Church in this overwhelming crisis. Among the local women who nursed the sick  under these severe conditions were Mrs. Guthrie and Miss Mallie. Col. Duffield, commander of the 9th Michigan,  reported on December 23, 1861 to Brig. Gen. John Robertson, "Our sick list is rapidly decreasing and now shows only 156 instead of the 316 as per enclosed monthly return. I have had all the men and officers of this command vaccinated to guard against a visitation from small Pox which is prevalent in several Brigades now in Kentucky". Many of wars casualties were not on the battlefield. In grateful remembrance we honor their service and the ultimate sacrifice of the 61 men that gave their lives while serving the Union at Fort Duffield.

OBITUARY: The Binghamton Press, Wednesday Evening, June 27, 1934
Mrs. Wheeler, 100, Former Binghamton Resident, Is Dead
Member of Pioneer Family Here Left City Nearly 70 Years Ago.
With the recent death in Seattle, Wash., of Mrs. Cynthia Knight Wheeler, former Binghamtonian, many of the older residents of the city have recalled to mind the members of the Wheeler family who were pioneers in this section and who left Binghamton nearly 70 years ago. She died in Seattle, Wash., on May 25. Mrs. Wheeler, who had passed her 100th birthday at the time of her death was the daughter of Stephen Knight of Providence, R. I., who brought his family in 1838 to Conklin, where he owned and operated lumber mills. In 1854, Cynthia Knight married G. Gulkeley Wheeler, oldest son of Dr. Alvin Wheeler of Binghamton. They lived in Binghamton for several years before going to Williamstown, Mass., where they made there home for 40 years. Following Mr. Wheeler's death in 1912, Mrs. Wheeler returned to Conklin, living there until 1915 when she went to California to spend the winter with her three daughters. Meeting with an accident which left her an invalid, Mrs. Wheeler was compelled to remain in the milder climate of the West Coast with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Grace Morrow of Sacramento, later of Seattle. In Seattle, Mrs. Wheeler celebrated her 100th birthday last March 5. Her four sons and three daughters are still living on the Pacific Coast: Fred B. Wheeler at Long Beach: Mrs. Mary E. Judd at Santa Monica: Mrs. Jessie Wheeler Plass at Berkeley, and Mrs. Morrow at Seattle. Relatives of the Knight family in this section are Mrs. Erwin Campbell of Conklin: Arthur Stuart of Corbettsville: Miss Edith Knight of Waverly and Mrs. Carrie Knight Beecher of Syracuse.

Henry C. KNIGHT [Parents] was born on 13 Jul 1827 in Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island. He died on 4 Sep 1910 in Broome County, New York. He was buried in Sep 1910 in Corbettsville Cemetery, Conklin, Broome, New York. Henry married (MRIN:843) Caroline Sarah Samantha ESTABROOK on 25 Jun 1851.
