BIOGRAPHY: William Bradford was one of the leaders of the Pilgrims who established Pl ymouth Colony. He was its governor for more than 30 years. His "Histo ry of Plymouth Plantation, 1620-1647", first printed in full in 185 6, is a minor classic, reflecting the unusual qualities of the man and t he values of the small group of English separatists who became known as Pi lgrims. Bradford was the son of a yeoman farmer. He was self-taught. As a young ma n, he join the Puritan groups that met illegally in nearby Scrooby and w as a member of that congregation when it separated from the Church of Engl and in 1606. Bradford was among the 125 Scooby separatists who sought (160 8) religious sanctuary in Holland. When the congregation decided (1617) to seek refuge in America, Bradford t ook major responsibility for arranging the details of the emigration. T he term "pilgrim" is derived from his description of himself and his corel igionists as they left Holland (22 July 1620) for Southampton, where th ey joined another group of English separatists on the MAYFLOWER. Bradfo rd was one of about a dozen original Scrooby church members who sailed f or America on the MAYFLOWER. He was the second signer of the Mayflower Com pact. On the arrival of the MAYFLOWER in Cape Cod Harbor on 21 November 162 0, an expedition was fitted out to explore the land to which William Bradf ord was one of the men added as counsel. It was shortly thereafter th at he was caught in an Indian deer trap made with a noose attached to a be nt twig. He also probably took part in the second exploration party (set o ut on 16 December) by persons whose names have not been recorded. He w as a member of the third expedition (16-22 December) which had the first e ncounter with the Indians on 18 December and which landed and selected Ply mouth as a settlement. When he returned to the MAYFLOWER on 22 Decembe r, he learned of the death of his wife Dorothy by accidential drowni ng on 12 December. When John Carver, Plymouth Colony's first governor, died suddenly in mid A pril 1621, Bradfor was unanimously elected to replace him and served eve ry year thereafter until 1657, with the exception of 1633, 1636 and 1644 w hen Thomas Prence served. He was reelected 30 times. In 1640, Bradford a nd the group of original settlers known as the "old comers" turned ov er to the colony the proprietary rights to its lands, which had been grant ed (1630) to him by the Warwick Patent and then shared by him with the o ld comers. During the period of his governorship, and especially during the first f ew years, Bradford provided the strong, steady leadership that kept the ti ny community alive. He strove to sustain the religious ideals of the found ers and to keep the colony's settlements compact and separate for the larg er neighboring colonies.

His book "History of Plymouth Plantation" is a classic.
