William Lewis Collings was born circa 1840 at Peoria, Illinois.
He was the son of Thomas Collings.
On 12 March 1860, William Lewis Collings married at Texas,, Sarah Ann Woodrome, age 15, daughter of Edmund Bee Woodrome and Eliza Jane Sexton.
William Lewis Collings died on 1 August 1863 at Fort Belknap, Texas.
He was buried at Fort Belknap, Texas.
NOTES FROM BURKETT-GREEN-WOODROME BOOK by Mina Mae Woodrome (PAGE 74): William Lewis Collings came to Texas with his parents when he was 16 years old. They settled first in Dallas County. His father, Thomas Collings, operated the first ferry on the Trinity River in Dallas. The family later moved to Erath County. Lewis was a Texas Ranger, a member of Captain Monroe Whiteside's Company. He was a sergeant. They went into camp on July 30, 1863 on the Brazos River, stationed there to protect the frontier from Indian raids. "The fighting was hard and the white men sometimes lost. On paint Creek in Haskell County, Lieutenant J.J. Stockbridge of Company G, with 15 men charged a part of 17 Indians. The Indians fled, then turned on their pursuers and killed Sergeant Collin(g)s and wounded six privates. Reinforcements were hurried out from Camp Cooper but the Indians got away." - - FRONTIER OF NORTHWEST TEXAS, 1846-1879 - by Richardson (Although the name was misspelled, there is no doubt this was William Lewis Collings. mwg) Another accunt of this fighting is in A HISTORY OF CENTRAL AND WESTERN TEXAS by Captain B.B. Paddock, Fort Worth, Texas. Published in 1911. Where is William Lewis Collings buried? "This I can remember - when I was about seven years old, Mother (Nancy Jane Collings Perkins) took all of us children to this old Fort and told us that her father was killed by the Indians and it seems to me that it was not far from Dallas. She said the only marker for his grave was a big rock with his initials carved on it. It took us two days to go and return. We lived at Avoca in Jones County at that time." - - Bessae Perkins Lamar In 1967 my sister, Elbie, and I went to Fort Belknap. This fort has been restored and is now an historic site and fine museum. The person on duty could give no information. He told us all the bodies had been taken to San Antonio for reburial in 1914. We looked for a big rock nearby but did not find one. When we returned I wrote to the Chamber of Commerce at Graham, Texas, to learn the location of the cemetery or other information. They did not reply. In January 1978, I wrote Mrs. Ben G. O'Neal, whose husband became Senator of that District and was effective in getting the law passed for restoration of this and other historic sites. She suggested I write the present archivist at Fort Belknap and gave me her name and address. I have written twice - no answer. I later learned that the military cemetery north of Old Fort Belknap was moved to the National Cemetery in San Antonio in 1907 (not 1914). On March 8, 1978, I was in San Antonio and called Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. They have no record of William Lewis Collings. |
