Tucker, born July 20, 1829, died December 26, 1857, also his children: Martha J. December 14, 1851, age 5 years 3 months and 13 days, others not named. (These may have been John Thomas Tucker's brothers, Curtis and Robert. He had a brother named Druce (not Bruce). mwg) The name Tucker has several distinct origins. In Ireland it was used as a synonym of O'Tougher. In Old English it came to mean "to tuck, to fill" and ocassionally it was used as a nickname for "courage". In the Battle Rolls of Sussex the name appeared in 1236. In England Tuckers were chiefly located in Devonshire. They were involved with Sir Francis Drake, Captain Hawkins and Sir Walter Raleigh. In America, Tuckers were successful and known for their contribution to the social and political life of the country. |

J. Taylor Tucker was born in 1873.
He was the son of Capt. John Thomas Tucker and Sarah Ann Woodrome.
J. Taylor Tucker died on 18 March 1892 at Sherwood, Irion County, Texas.
NOTES FROM BURKETT-GREEN-WOODROME BOOK by Mina Mae Woodrome (PAGE 88-89): "I can remember my mother, Nancy Jane Collings Perkins, saying she had a half-brother who died when he was about 18 years old on a cattle drive from Texas to Kansas. He took sick and died very suddenly somewhere in Texas. "Here are some notes I have found, 'His name was Taylor Tucker, son of John T. Tucker and Sarah Ann Woodrome Collings Tucker, half-brother of Nancy Jane Collings (Perkins) and Edmond Lewis Collings. He was 18 years old when he died on March 18, 1892, at Sherwood, Irion County, Texas. The cowboys took his wallet off him and sent it home and Grandma and Grandpa gave the wallet to Nancy Jane. In it today is one match that was left in it by Taylor. "My mother gave me this old wallet and I have it now in my trunk. It is made of leather and dark red twill cloth -- very unusual to see one like it." - - Bessae Perkins Lamar When my [Mina Mae Woodrome] sister, Elbie, and I visited Bessae in her home in Marlow, Oklahoma in 1967, she showed the wallet to us. It is unusual. John Henry Wilson has the J. T. Tucker Family Bible. He also has several empty (used) envelopes addressed to J. Taylor Tucker, Ozona, Texas, post-marked 1892, from Nubia, Texas. Nubia is near Mulberry Canyon, Taylor County, Texas. A life sketch of Hon. John Thomas Tucker in "Texas State Government" by E. H. Loughery published in 1897, names his children including "J. T., Jr.". We believe this is in error and should have been shown without the "Jr.". It should have been "J. T." for "J. Taylor". |
