First Generation
1. GEN. THOMAS MATHEWS was born in 1742 in St. Christopher's, better known as St. Kitts, an island of the British West Indies. He was a son of Samuel Augustus Mathews, a mason of Basseterre, and Mary Gacey. A brother, Samuel Augustus Mathews, left a body of writing which preserved many oral traditions of St. Kitts and the Creole language of its slaves. Gen. Mathews died February 20, 1812 in Norfolk, Va. His passing was noted in the local newspaper.
Thomas had arrived in Norfolk by 1772, likely as early as 1764. He married MOLLY MILLER presumably in 1773, as the marriage bond was given in Norfolk on July 9 of that year. Molly was old Norfolk stock; the daughter of MATTHIAS MILLER and ANN EADY, and a granddaughter of DR. ROBERT HODGES. She was born in 1751 and died July 8, 1837 in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Thomas studied law and was admitted to the Bar, but entered Washington's army in the early days of the Revolution. On March 25, 1776, Mathews was commissioned a captain and recruiting officer; he rose in 1777 to the rank of major in the artillery regiment of Col. John Marshall, who later became Chief Justice of the United States. Mathews advanced to lieutenant colonel with the 4th Regiment on Nov. 8, 1779 and served in that rank until the end of the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, and family tradition has it, was a friend of George Washington.
In civilian life, Mathews was elected a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1788 and was chosen Speaker of the House in consecutive years from 1788 to 1799. A descendant notes that Mathews as Speaker cast the deciding vote by which Virginia adopted the Bill of Rights, and by extension, brought about the ratification of the Constitution. He also helped to bring about the creation of Mathews County, Virginia, which was named in his honor. The county observed its 200th anniversary in 1988. In 1790 he was elected Grand Master of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Virginia and held that position until 1793, when he was appointed Brigadier General of the Virginia Militia, headquartered at Norfolk. His great-grandson Frank Vaughan of Elizabeth City, N.C., noted that "while he was chief of the militia occurred the so-called 'Douglas War' incident upon the British Man-of -War 'Leopard' which fired upon the unprepared American frigate 'Chesapeake.' "
Vaughan also noted: "General Mathews received compensation after the Revolution for his losses therein, in the shape of land grants in Ohio, which he probably got rid of very rapidly, as he was confined to what is legally known as the "jail bounds" of Norfolk for debt at the time of his death. The legend is that on a visit to his birthplace at St. Kitts, after the Revolution, the French captured the island from the British, and that Mathews gave his personal note for the amount of his ransom, which the British government failed to honor. To my mind, General Mathew's greatest public service was in the manful service he rendered in the adoption of the Constitution by the state of Virginia. The jealousies between the 13 colonies rendered the fight very narrow, and, with New York, Virginia was looked to to lead the way."
There was a bit more to "the legend" than Frank Vaughan may have known. In 1805 Thomas Mathews traveled back to St. Kitts, probably to claim land that had been left to him by his aunt, Sarah Gacey. In March of that year, the French invaded and held the town of Basseterre for ransom. Mathews, involved in the ransom negotiations, pledged $10,000 of his own for the liberty of the town and was never reimbursed, either by the St. Kitts Assembly or the British government.
Mathews was buried in the church yard of Christ Church, Norfolk, which once stood opposite St. Paul's. The Christ Church congregation, which favored ratification of the Constitution, broke away from St. Paul's in 1791. St. Paul's, the 'Loyalist Church' stood empty for decades. Christ Church eventually burned, and all traces of it vanished in redevelopment. St. Paul's reorganized as a congregation in 1832. Notes on file at St. Paul's record that all traces of his Mathews' grave and its original headstone were lost. For many years, a modern military issue marker placed by the Fort Nelson Daughters of the American Revolution of Portsmouth stood near the grave of his friend, John Nivison in St. Paul's churchyard.
Molly Miller Mathews moved to Elizabeth City, N.C. after the death of her husband, where she died at the residence of her son, Dr. Samuel Mathews. A descendant preparing her application to the Daughters of the American Revolution noted: " 'Molly' Miller was born in Norfolk County Virginia in 1752. Her father, Matthias Miller, was living in that part of Norfolk County south of Tanner's Creek (now a part of the City of Norfolk) in 1784. Her mother was Ann Eady. Molly (Mary) Miller was the great-granddaughter of Dr. Robert Hodge, a native of Devon, England, whose wife, Mary, was the granddaughter of Capt. Francis Mason who emigrated to America in the "Margett and John" in 1614. She died at Elizabeth City, N.C. in 1843 [an error, as as her will was proved in September 1837] where she resided with her son Dr. Samuel Mathews. According to Revolutionary War pension application records, she applied for benefits on Sept. 13, 1836 in Pasquotank County, N.C. She alleged she was 84 years of age. "

2. SARAH GASEY MATHEWS was born April 2, 1775, and died October 19, 1822 in Princess Anne County, Virginia. She married WILLIAM ELLEGOOD on January 31, 1791. He was a son of COL. JACOB ELLEGOOD of Rose Hall Plantation. He was born 1768, and died October 19, 1815.
The Ellegood family's sympathies were Loyalist, and most of its members fled to Canada during the Revolution. William Ellegood remained in Virginia to save the family estate from confiscation, though Rose Hall was sold in 1803. In 1810 he served as a justice in Princess Anne County.

3. MARY MATHEWS was born November 25, 1784 and died March 17, 1826 in Elizabeth City, N.C. She married GEN. WILLIAM GREGORY in Norfolk, Va. The Rev. Syms officiated. Gen. Gregory was born November 30, 1774 in Elizabeth City, N.C. and died October 26, 1845 in Elizabeth City. Mary Mathews' claim to fame came when Thomas Moore, the Irish poet, was lodged and entertained at the home of Consul John Hamilton on his visit to Norfolk in 1803. He wrote, "Miss Mathews came in and played the piano for us." As her sister Sarah had already become Mrs. Ellegood, the title "Miss Mathews" belonged to the second daughter Mary.
Harold Cowper Vaughan recalled: "General William Gregory was the son-in-law of General Mathews, his wife being a first cousin of Claudia Ellegood; the Wileys derive from this line. My mother also remembered well Gen. Gregory who was quite bibulous and had the habit of riding around the yard on festive occasions astride the shoulders of a big slave."

8. i. CLAUDIA CATTELLE MULREIN HAMILTON GREGORY, born October 27, 1807; died February 22, 1877, in Raleigh, N.C., at the home of her son. A letter written by her grandson explains the provenance of her sumptuous name.
4. DR. SAMUEL MATHEWS, a leading physician of Elizabeth City. In 1829 he was instrumental in the establishment of a mariner's hospital and carrying out mandatory vaccinations to protect the town from the epidemics of the time. He married HARRIET SAWYER, daughter of ENOCH SAWYER and MARY GREGORY. Harriet was born at Woodlawn, a plantation now in Camden County, N.C.

5. MARY ANNE ELLEGOOD was born March 1793 and died November 1827 in Elizabeth City, N.C. She married ADAM CORNICK March 13, 1808. He was born in Princess Anne County, Va. In one family communication, Cornick's given name is recorded as James.

7. CLAUDIA HAMILTON ELLEGOOD was born September 17, 1798 in King's Lane, Norfolk, Va., and died December 26, 1870 in Mahanoy City., Pa. The name Hamilton honors her godfather, Col. John Hamilton, British Consul at Norfolk, Va. The name will recur in every generation of Vaughans to the present. Harold Cowper Vaughan noted, "Among the prominent Highlanders who left North Carolina in 1777 was John Hamilton 'a merchant of considerable note' who sailed from New Berne on a 'Scotch transport having on board a number of gentlemen of that nation.' Hamilton afterward organized these Highlanders into a Loyalist regiment, which, on numerous battlefields of the South, maintained the high reputation of their race for fighting qualities." I am not sure he is correct in identifying this Hamilton with the John Hamilton who was British consul at Norfolk.
8. CLAUDIA CATTELLE MULREIN HAMILTON GREGORY was born October 27, 1807, and died February 22, 1877 in Raleigh, N.C., at home of her son Philip Augustus Wiley. She married the REV. PHILIP BRUCE WILEY October 26, 1826, in Elizabeth City, N.C. The Rt. Rev. John S. Ravenscroft officiated. The Rev. Wiley was the first settled rector of Christ Church parish in Elizabeth City, N.C., serving 1826-1827 and 1829-1833. He was the son of RUFUS WILEY. He was born August 13, 1804, and died August 19, 1840.

10. JOHN MCMORINE MATHEWS was born about 1825. He married CATHARINE DALLAM COOK, a daughter of WILLIAM G. COOK and EMILY MURPHY. She was born about 1834 in Maryland. He was a watchmaker by trade; apprenticed to his father-in-law, the jeweler William G. Cook [January 5, 1797 -January 12, 1856], who was a native of Maryland. Francis Vaughan left an intimate portrait of 'dear old John Mathews, whom I loved as my own brother' in his 1896 memoir. John was, in fact, his cousin.
... I began to long for the society of women. I must forthwith put myself in training, and who so fit to counsel and advise me as dear old John Mathews, a lady's man by nature, handsome, magnetic, exceedingly popular with both sexes, a gentleman from his cradle. I sought him, and without loss of time. We were intimate friends. I told him frankly that either Cupid had shot me or was about to shoot and that I felt I ought to be looking out for myself. Laughing heartily, he put his arm around my waist and drew me close to him. "I will be your friend and mentor," he said. "You have come to the very one who can guide you aright. I have experienced your ailment, have many, many times been afflicted with it. I shall always be near to direct you. You shall go with me to see the girls -- all of them, the prettiest and best of them, which is the only way of bringing you to determine correctly whether this little witch, so expert with her lariat, is the right one for you. Yes, I will take my gawky in hand and rub him until I shall have him bright as the silver moon. Come, dear fellow, nestle as close under my wing as you will; nothing shall hurtyou. You shall conquer." The happy words got my heart in a glow. I got under the upraised wing. He went and I went with him. It was a dreadful ordeal, but whenever I got frightened and became dumb his handsome face, full of smiles: a cheering word would be said that never failed to have its good effect. Dear old John Mathews! How all the girls loved him; yes, all. How could they but love him who was in the bloom and vigor of young manhood, whose voice had the tones of a harp, whose spirits were so lively and happy, and whose face was the very picture of intellect? His every move was grace itself. Everybody loved John Mathews.Under the faithful training of such a one I learned to look into a woman's face, and have and express an opinion. I became vain and took to writing gushing verses and having them printed in village newspapers. My Mentor complimented me; said my poems had the right ring; were a success. That was right enough. I asked no other critic, and went on writing verses. I became eloquent in love language -- the music of birds, the beauty of flowers and the splendors of moonlight. John said superfine. That was enough. John Mathews was a sweet singer and an expert performer on many musical instruments. He played well on the guitar and taught me to accompany him. Ah, fifty years have passed, and he, then so full of life and happiness, who sang so sweetly at my side, is in the grave. Sorrows came upon him; his eyes lost their beautiful luster and his cheeks the roses that had so blushed upon them. The vigorous form became tottering and decrepit. For years he has been sleeping in the cold grave!
