OGLETHORPE COUNTY ENROLLEES IN 1805 LAND LOTTERY
The act which created the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery laid down specific requirements which must be met before a citizen was eligible to enroll for the lottery, at the court house of their county of RESIDENCE. First, they must be U.S. citizens, and residents for at least one year in Georgia before enrollment. They must have met at least ONE of the following requirements as well: BACHELOR or WIDOWER with no minor children - 1 draw MARRIED MAN with wife and/or MINOR child or children living - 2 draws

WIDOW WITH MINOR CHILD OR CHILDREN - 2 draws [Childless widows or widows with adult children were excluded from enrollment as were adult single women - "Spinsters."]

MINOR ORPHAN or FAMILY OF MINOR ORPHANS, father dead, mother either DEAD or REMARRIED - 1 draw
"W" or "Widow" and "0" or "Orphans" following many names discloses the eligibility of these enrollees.
Contrary to the sub-heading on page 3, this was NOT "Names of Revolutionary Soldiers who drew Land Lots," but was the county enrollment list which was submitted to the state for drawing in the 1805 Land Lottery.
NO QUESTION OF MILITARY ELIGIBILITY WAS ASKED ON ANY GEORGIA LAND LOTTERY UNTIL THE LOTTERY OF 1820.
HANCOCK COUNTY ENROLLEES IN THE 1807 LAND LOTTERY

Enrollment in this lottery was also limited to U.S.citizens, and some additional categories were set up under the act. For the only time SPINSTERS - single women of 21 or more years - were entitled to enroll. They are distinguished on the list by "s" preceeding their name, while widows are marked by a "w". Childless widows, or widows with adult children were allowed to enroll for this lottery, having been excluded in the 1805 lottery.

The marginal, and handwritten notes found in this reprint were those of the late Mrs. Sarah Quinn Smith, well known Georgia genealogist, who checked the published list against the original and made these corrections and additions.
