KOLEK
Kolek Family Immigration from
Przykop, Poland to USA
The Kolek family originated in Poland
and resided in the Przykop area (by Mielec). Three of the children named Jozef
(Joseph), Walenty (Valentine) and Pawel (Paul) immigrated to the United States of
America (USA) in the years spanning 1903 thru 1913. Joseph, the oldest of the
brothers, was said to have taken on the spelling of his last name as “Koweck”
in order to more closely match the pronunciation of the Polish spelling of the
Kolek name. The younger brothers Valentine and Paul retained the original
spelling of the family name.
Joseph Kolek, at age 18, arrived in the USA
at the port of Baltimore,
Maryland on March 22, 1903 aboard the SS Cassel and took up
residence with his Uncle Jozef Mazur in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. Joseph eventually met Hedwig
Meyer (of Germany)
in Pittsburgh and they married in
1909. His name is listed as “Jozef Kolek” on the ship manifest.
Valentine Kolek, at age 18, arrived in the USA
at the port of New
York, New York
on February 16, 1905 aboard
the SS Barbarossa and joined his brother Joseph in Pittsburgh,
PA. He later took up residence in the New
York City area where he eventually met and married
Mary Bernat (of Poland)
sometime around 1911. His name is listed as “Walenty Kolek” on the ship manifest.
Paul Kolek, at age 23, arrived in the USA
at the port of New
York, New York
on June 18, 1913 aboard the
SS Finland and took up residence near his brother Valentine in New
York. Paul eventually met Barbara (of Poland?) in New
York and they married sometime around 1916. His name is listed as “Pawel Kalek”
on the ship manifest.
These Kolek brothers are said to also have another brother
and a sister (names unknown) that remained in Poland
with the parents Jan and Jadwiga (Hastada) Kolek. If you have any information
