As told to me by Shirley Yott, "My grandfather, John Edward, was a carpenter. After the depression and there were jobs to be had he worked for the Board of Education. He and my father were best friends at that time. He was also a Mason. I don't know who's idea it was to move out to West Valley but they had two different farms out there and they also lived in East Otto for awhile. A couple of years he farmed full time but then he went back to the city and farmed part time. They moved alot, they lived on Benzinger and Northumberland when I lived with them as well as two farms in West Valley. During the war grandma worked for Curtis Wright on Genessee St. near the airport. So did my mother, Virginia. On the farm, grandma would make butter and sold eggs to people in town. Grandma and grandpa raised my sister Jean like she was there own and I went to live with them after my father's parents died. In the summer they always had a houseful and Tante's grandsons came to visit. Tante was grandma's sister Dora and her grandsons were Billy, Bobby, Ronnie and Buddy. Dora was a kleptomaniac and I understand that she and grandma got arrested for pickpocketing although I have not checked that out."

John Edward was stationed in Pharr, TX during the Mexican border uprising around 1917.
