Descendants of Richard Salisbury

 Generations 1 - 3

Generation No. 1

1.  RICHARD1 SALISBURY was born Abt. 1755 in Probably Virginia, and died Bef. 1798 in Patrick Co., VA.

Notes for RICHARD SALISBURY:

It was long accepted that Richard Salisbury was the Rev. War Vet from Connecticut that married Polly Milton.  It has now come to light that both Richard and Polly were buried in CT and sold land there after the death of the Richard of Virginia.

More work needs to be done in Patrick County.  The estate of W.B. Hughes, lists Elizabeth and William Salisbury as devisees.  Their mother, currently unknown, may be a Hughes.  Abstracts of Wills, Inventories and Accounts in patrick County, Virginia 1791-1823.

There is a Richard Salisbury in Botetourt Co., VA, 10th day of April, 1783, exempted from paying parish levies  on account of age and infirmity.  He is listed on their tax lists for 1773, 1781 and 1782.  He shows on the 1785 Census, household containing 4 white persons.  I don't think this is our Richard, too old, but may be his father.

We know Richard was still alive in 1795.  Patrick County Order Book, 1791-1810, February Court, 1795:  William Salsberry is allowed 2 days attendance this Court and 3 days October Court for Richard Salsberry.

By 1800 he is dead.  February Court, 1800:  Advised that Overseers of the Poor bind out Elijah Salsberry, an orphan boy, to David Roberson, according to law, the said orphan is 13 years old.

February Court 1801:  Ordered that the Overseers of the Poor bind out Keziah Salsberry to Jacob Adams, Senr. according to law.

Lawsuits for Patrick County:

Salisbury vs. Gee, September 10th 1792, Thomas His and Mathew Small came into court and Acknowledged themselves indebted to the Commonwealth.  ...Gee shall be of good behavior one year and a day to the citizens of the Commonwealth and especially towards Richard Salisbury.  The suit went forward with William Salsbury appearing as a witness for Richard Salsbury vs. Gee in October 1794.

The following counties need to be researched.
Pittsylvania County formed 1766 from Halifax County
Henry County formed 1776 from Pittsylvania County
Franklin County formed 1785 from Henry County
Patrick County formed 1790 from Franklin County

Franklin County Marriages
7 Jan 1801, John Salsbury to Lucy Maxey, dau. of John and Phebe
28 April 1802, Mary Salsbury to Thomas Ferguson, Lewis Davis surety
29 March 1808, Elijah Salsbury to Keziah Ray, d/o of Benjamin.  Richard Pugh, surety.

Elijah was a son of RIchard, but it is unclear at this point if John and Mary are other unknown children or children of the William witnessing the lawsuits.
