Family Lore has it that the Wittens came from Prussia on the Elbe River to England in the 4th century.   The first recorded Wittens in England has them residing in Yorkshire in 856.

I have found references; JOHN GRAHAM OF VIRGINIA, by Jillson, pp. 550; and WHITTEN AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by Alexander and Whitten, pp. 493-499; stating that Elizabeth was adopted by her father's brother John.  I believe she is the natural daughter of Phillip, who died in 1732, when she was 12 yrs. old.

Witten.  I can't tell if he was adopted or took the name).) was born 1742 in Prince George, Co., MD, and died 1781 in Bedford Co., VA.  He married ELIZABETH 'LENNIE' CECIL (Source: Paul Tobler.) Abt. 1760, daughter of SAMUEL CECIL and REBECCA WHITE.  She was born 1745 in Prince George, Co., MD, and died in Bedford Co., VA.

 They are said to have married in Md. moving to Bedford City, VA pt Peaks of Otter later moving to Tazewell Co., still later moving to Bedford Co. where the family remains spelling the name Whitten.  From:  PENDLETON, History of Tazewell Co.

It is believed that he is not a natural son.  Philip's Horn Book does not list him as a brother.  In the Judiciary Records of Frederick Co., MD, 1751...John Gates aged 8 years...Robert Gates said to be 6 years old on the 26th day of March next...bound to Thomas Witten.  He was the son of Elizabeth Gates.  Father unknown at this time.

Served as an ensign in the Virginia militia of Tazewell County, Va. during the Revolutionary War and was placed on pension call 1833 pension #55113.  He and Thomas Witten, SR. enlisted Capt. Daniel Smith's Co., VA, Cot. 1774 and fought Indians at the Battle of Point Pleasant.  He enlisted in the Continental Army in 1780 in the Carolinas.  He was an ensign in a troop of mounted riflemen from Washington County, VA under Colonel William Campbell.

James Witten was distinguished as a hunter and woodsman by the age of 15.  He was chosen to act as a spy.  He was brave and generous and became a conspicuous character in border wars.  From BICKLEY'S Hist.  James md. his cousin Rebecca Cecil, and lived and died on Plum Creek.  From WITTEN AND ALLIED FAMILIES.  He was regularly employed as scout rom 1794 to 1796, operating in the vicinity of Witten's Fort, Tazewell Co., VA. In 1814, after his father and grandfather were murdered, Patrick Cummings and William J. Mayo were appointed his guardians. (Floyd Co Order Book 1, Dec. 1813).  He acquired the estate of his deceased father on 22 Nov. 1824.  He became fond of racing horses, drinking whiskey, and fighting.  Family tradition holds that while he was away at the races a daughter was born   He felt so badly about missing birth that he swore off drink and he freed his slaves.  He was listed in the 2 Aug 1850 Census at Floyd Co., KY, occupation farmer, no slaves.  He moved in 1852 to Edgar Co., IL, where other members of the Morgan family had moved in the 1820's.  His eldest son, Thomas Graham Morgan, remained in KY. During the Civil War Thomas Graham Morgan served the CSA while his brother David, Jr. served in the Union Army.
