CHARLES FRANCIS DECOURSEY

By Frank E. DeCoursey 1995

Charley grew up in Leavenworth. He was the youngest of the family. He graduated from grade school and his father sent him to New Orleans for his college work. He thoroughly loved the New Orleans life style and practiced it throughout his life. At the family gatherings throughout the years, he insisted on making the salads. He felt he was the only one qualified after his New Orleans experience.

He was a giant of a man but as kind as could be. A real extrovert. He never married and lived at the National Hotel. He would meet Harry every day for lunch at the Elks Club. He was almost the opposite of Harry. Where Harry conserved money, Charley couldn't get enough to spend.

Charley took care of the customers in Leavenworth. The biggest account was Fort Leavenworth and Charley thoroughly enjoyed hobnobbing with the officers out there. Charley was some twelve or fourteen years older than Frank but they shared the same birth date 1 and celebrated it together for many years. Frank was to have the same birth date as a son-in-law Harry Lester 2 later on.

Besides learning gastronomic skills in New Orleans Charley learned the "pinch". Kate and Regina would not turn their back on him and would rush to the kitchen saying "that Charley!"

1 Frank is Charley's brother Edwin Eugenes son Francis Charles. He and Charlie were both born on 12 Sep.
2 Harry was born on 10 Sep.
