Birth Certificate of Mary Ann Josephine DeCoursey (1921 - 1988) Mary Ann was the fifth born of Edwin J. and Mary Josephine (Pfaff) DeCoursey's six children and their only daughter. She was born in Casa Grande, Arizona, where her father was a well-known businessman. He among other things owned a pool hall, was in the poultry and real estate businesses and ran a John Deere agency. In about 1931, when she was about ten years old, the family moved to Los Angeles, California. There the family ran a grocery store in Alhambra. Her father Edwin died in 1936 when Mary Ann was 15 years old. In 1944 she married Joe Cleary, they had two sons. Mary Ann wrote a detailed account of her family for The DeCoursey Family. Conjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye, is an inflammation of the membrane that covers the eyeball and lines the eyelid. It is usually caused by a bacillus or virus, and is in the case of newborn infants most often contracted during delivery. Ophthalmia neonatorum was a problem at one time; however, routine instillation of silver nitrate solution into the eyes of newborn infants has materially reduced the incidence of blindness.
