Death Certificate of
Michael James Connelly

(1865 - 1920)

Michael James Connelly was one of the youngest of Gregory Connelly and Hannah McDonnell's nine children. He was born in Ohio, probably Cincinnati, on Feb 8, 1865. When he was a child he moved with his mother and silbings across the Ohio River to Ludlow, Kentucky in the 1870's after the death of his father. He appears to have spent the rest of his life in Ludlow, working as an engineer for the railroad. Before the discovery of his death certificate, his whereabouts after 1880 were not known. Michael married Emma Case of Ludlow in about 1888. Emma was the daughter of Dominick Case (born in France) and Theresa Sheeman (born in Germany). Michael and Emma had nine children, only four of whom reached adulthood. Emma survived her husband by 15 years, dying in Ludlow in 1935.

3 Chronic nephritis (also called glomerulonephritis) is the advanced stage of a group of kidney disorders, resulting in inflammation and gradual, progressive destruction of the glomeruli (internal kidney structures) and thereby loss of kidney function. In some cases, the cause is found to be a specific attack to the body's immune system, but in most cases, the cause is unknown (it is generally thought that a still-unidentified abnormality of the immune system is to blame). This condition causes high blood pressure (hypertension) and is among the leading causes of chronic kidney failure. Damage to the glomeruli means that the kidneys don't filter properly resulting in blood and protein in the urine. Because symptoms develop gradually, the disorder may be discovered when there is an abnormal urinalysis during a routine physical or during an examination for another, unrelated disorder. It may be discovered as a cause of high blood pressure that is difficult to control. This condition may develop after survival of the acute phase of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. In about one-quarter of people with chronic glomerulonephritis there is no prior history of kidney disease, and the disorder first appears as chronic kidney failure.
Nephritis was also listed as the primary cause of death of Michael's mother.

4 Uremia is the presence of excessive amounts of urea (a nitrogen-type waste product) in the blood, which may be a sign of kidney disease or failure. As these waste products accumulate they act as poisons, damaging tissues and reducing the ability of organs to function.
