Employees of the DeCoursey Creamery Co.
1930's
These wonderful photos were very generously donated by Sandy Goepfert. I am very grateful to her! Her father, Arthur Ashley, worked for the DeCoursey Cream Co. He is pictured in the photos, along with a woman who is identified as Mrs. Stratton. Sandy believes her husband also worked for the creamery.
I have located both families in the 1930 US Federal Census. They are living two blocks away from each other on the eastern edge of Kansas City. Frank and Kate (Cotter) DeCoursey's house is nearby, on the same residential block as the Ashleys. Arthur is living with his parents and siblings, and works as a truck driver for a grocery store. His older brother James is a milk salesman for a creamery, probably the DeCoursey Creamery. There are three other creamery workers listed on the same page.

Writing on the back of the picture on the left reads "Mrs Stratton & dog". Her husband is believed to have worked for the creamery. I believe she is Elizabeth Stratton, wife of William Stratton. The man in the picture on the right could be William (he is also in the next picture, as "Unknown 1"). The Strattons are living two blocks away from the Ashleys in the 1930 census. William gives his occupation as creamery laborer. Both William and Elizabeth were born in Northern Ireland, and emigrated to the United States about 1910. They were married in about 1926, and had no children. William is also listed in the 1920 census, living in Kansas City and working as a creamery truck driver.
