Obituary for
Catherine "Kate" (McDonnell) Mullen
(1842 - 1922)

Catherine "Kate" McDonnell was born in County Galway, Ireland, the eighth of Michael McDonnell and Mary Needham's nine children. The family emigrated to the United States about 1849. They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where several of Kate's siblings remained. Kate married Michael J. Mullen, also of County Galway, around 1860. They had eight children, only one of which, son John M., married and had children. John was also the only one of the children to outlive Kate, most of the others died of tuberculosis. Kate and Michael moved to Omaha, Nebraska about 1867 and then back to Cincinnati about 1870, where Michael died of tuberculosis in 1875. After her husband's death Kate and her children moved back to Omaha. Kate and her family, except for son John, are buried in St. Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.

MRS. CATHERINE MULLEN DIES.
Mrs. Catherine Mullen, 85 years of age, a pioneer resident of Omaha, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. James Fitzpatrick,1 in Ludlow, Ky., Sunday morning, October 1. Mrs. Mullen came to Omaha from Cincinnati fifty-three years ago. After living in Omaha for a couple of years, the family returned to Cincinnati, where the father, M. J. Mullen, died. Returning to Omaha with her family of young children Mrs. Mullen established a home in old St. Philomenas parish, at Fifteenth and Howard streets. Here her children grew to young man and womanhood, when the family moved to Twenty-eighth and Poppleton, in St. Peters parish. From St. Peters her sons, Peter and Charles, her daughters, Lilly and Julia, were buried.

Mrs. Mullen is a fine example of the old-fashioned type of mother, whose lifes work was done in and through her home. Left a widow with a family of young children she managed the property her husband left [text missing]er children all had the op[text missing] of the educational advan-[tages o(?)]f Creighton and the Sacred [Heart C(?)]onvent.

[text missing] Mullens own life and that of her family and home, all so full of kind neighborliness and hospitality, will be lovingly remembered by a host of friends.

Since the death, four years ago, of her daughter Julia, an ardent and effective worker in Catholic welfare work, particularly the Christ Child Society, Mrs. Mullen had made her home with her son, John. About a year ago she went to visit at the home of her niece where she died.

Mrs. Mullen is survived by her son, John M. Mullen and family of St. Bridgets parish; by her niece, Mrs. James Fitzpatrick, of Ludlow, Ky.; a nephew, Joseph Scanlan,2 of Minneapolis, who made his home with her in his youth, and by a number of nieces and nephews about Cincinnati and in Seattle.3 She was buried on Tuesday. Her last earthly resting place is with her husband and children in the Cincinnati cemetery,4 to which those of the family who died in Omaha were taken.

A Requiem Mass will be said for Mrs. Mullen at St. Peters church on Saturday morning, October 14, at 8 oclock. Father Stenson, an old friend of Mrs. Mullen and her family, will be celebrant.

1 Mrs. James Fitzpatrick is Mary J. (Connelly) Fitzpatrick, the daughter of Catherine's sister Hannah (McDonnell) Connelly.
2 Should be Scanlon, not Scanlan. Michael J. "M.J." Scanlon was the son of Catherine's sister Mary (McDonnell) Scanlon.
3 The Seattle relatives mentioned are the daughters of her brother Michael J. McDonnell, Pearl and Bess.
