Bill was born in Kansas City, Kansas, growing up in the same part of town as his future wife Ann Ciston and attending the same schools. The 1930 census shows them living about 11 blocks away from each other. Ann and Bill were married in 1942 and had nine children; two daughters and seven sons. The family lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma from about 1945 to 1953 while Bill ran the Pure White Dairy with his cousin Ed.
