Obituary for
Thomas Bernard "Tom" Hughes
(1867 - 1899)

Thomas B. Hughes was the sixth of Martin D. and Mary (Wickham) Hughes' eleven children. His father and his mother's uncles were prominent contactors in the Council Bluffs, Iowa area. Tom was born and grew up in Council Bluffs. He married Julia Sinnott, who was related to his sister Mary's husband J. Frank Coad, in July 1896. In March 1897 they moved to Anaconda, Montana where Tom managed a clothing business. Their only child, George, was born there in June 1898. It appears Julia went back to Council Bluffs after the baby was born as she was not in Montana when Tom became ill in April 1899. He died there a few weeks later, and is buried in his parents' family plot in St. Joseph Cemetery, Council Bluffs.

Death Claims Tom Hughes.
A telegram received here yesterday afternoon brought the news of the death of Thomas B. Hughes yesterday in Anaconda, Mont. The remains will be brought to Council Bluffs for burial and will reach here Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. Announcement of the funeral will be made later.
Tom Hughes, as he was best known to a host of warm friends, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hughes, and was born in Council Bluffs, 32 years ago. He was educated in St. Benedict's college, Atchison, Kas., where he graduated in 1885. In 1886 he entered into business in this city and continued here until March 22, 1897, when he went to Montana. Until his sickness several weeks ago he was manager of a large clothing establishment in Anaconda.
Mr. Hughes has not been in good health for some time, but his relatives and friends here knew nothing of his illness until the receipt of a telegram recently stating that he had been in the hospital three weeks with inflammatory rheumatism. While his illness was regarded as serious, his physicians held out hopes that he would soon become better.
Mr. Hughes was married July 22, 1896, to Miss Julia Sinnott of Omaha, and his death bereaves her and their baby boy. Mrs. Hughes left for Anaconda several days ago in response to telegraphic summons, and reached her husband's bedside before his death.
