John Hughes was born in County Mayo, Ireland about 1800. He was married twice in Ireland in the 1830's, first to Mary Welch, mother of his son Martin, and then to Kate with whom he had six daughters: Honora (married Edward Murphy), Katherine (married James Coyle), Ellen (married Albert O. Hill, John Denney and George Gleason), Mary (married Patrick Carter), Anne (married John Coyle) and Sarah (married James Clair). The family emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. in the late 1860's, joining Martin who had come over several years earlier and settled in Council Bluffs, Iowa. John is buried in his son Martin's family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Council Bluffs.
