Obituary of
Mary A. (Wickham) Hughes
(1835 - 1904)

Mary was the second born of Patrick W. and Cecelia (Pryor) Wickham's 10 children. Like her parents, she was born in County Leitrim, Ireland. It is belived that she emigrated to the United States in about 1854 with her mother and older brother Edward. They located first in New York City, where they were joined a year later by their brother James. From there they went to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where they were joined in 1858 by her father Patrick and siblings Patrick, Owen and Ann. (Only 6 of the 10 children emigrated, it is believed the others had died.) Mary married Martin D. Hughes, also of Ireland, in May 1958. Like several of her brothers, Martin was a brick mason. For several years Martin and Mary's brothers James and Owen P. were partners in a contracting business. Mary and Martin had eleven children, seven of which reached adulthood. They were Ida C. (married Charles A. Fox), George F. (married Elizabeth J. Keating), Thomas B. (married Julia C. Sinnott), Cecilia A. (married John M. Mullen), John J. (married Clara H. Wyckoff), Mary D. (married John F. Coad) and Martin D. (married Mary E. Pierce and Grace Thompson). Mary died in Council Bluffs, and is buried in St. Joseph's cemetery there.
