Mary E. Hughes was the daughter of John J. Hughes and Clara Wyckoff, the fifth of six children. Her family moved to Des Moines, Iowa from Council Bluffs about 1919, and she appears to have spent the rest of her life there. She married Bernard D. Kurtz of Des Moines on 23 June 1930. They had six children.

Mary E. Kurtz
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Hughes) Kurtz, 63, of Des Moines died at a hospital there Wednesday after an extended illness.
She was a former resident of Council Bluffs.
Survivors include: husband Bernard D., a son, Bernard D. Kurtz Jr. of Des Moines; five daughters, Mrs. Martin Walsh and Miss Alice Kurtz, both of Des Moines, Mollie Kurtz of Minneapolis, Minn., Sister Saint Keiran of Dubuque, and Mrs. Ray Orgler of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. J. F. Wilcox of Council Bluffs and Mrs. T. W. Hofsommer of Chicago, Ill. and a number of grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Augustine Church in Des Moines with interment at a cemetery there.
Dunn Funeral Home of Des Moines is in charge of arrangements.
