Obituary of
Mary A. (McDonnell) Scanlon
(1835 - 1886)
Mary A. McDonnell was the daughter of Michael McDonnell and Mary Needham, the fourth of their eight children. She was born in County Galway, Ireland in 1835 and emigrated to the United States with her family around 1850. After living in New York for a short time the family settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. She married Michael J. Scanlon, also of Irish origin, there in 1853. Shortly thereafter they moved to Juneau County, Wisconsin where they lived for the rest of their lives, running a farm. A history of the family states that Mary was the only one in the neighborhood who could read, so she read and wrote letters for her neighbors. Mary and Michael had 14 children, four of whom died at a young age. Their children were well educated, and most of their daughters worked as nurses or school teachers before their marriages.
Mary and Michael's children were: Thomas F. (married Annie Havey), John (married Julia Smyth), Mary J. (died young), Michael J. (married Sarah W. Plummer), Catherine (died young), Edward (died young), James P. (did not marry), Catherine E. (married James Smyth), Julia G. (married Andrew McIntyre), Agnes M. (married William J. Troy), Margaret E. (married William Galvin), Maria V. (married Jeremiah S. Foley II) and William E. (married Mary A. Foley).

February 1886DIED. SCANLON.At Lyndon, Feb. 21, 1886, Mary, aged 52 years, wife of Michael Scanlon, of Seven Mile Creek.
Funeral services at St. Marys Church, Lyndon, Tuesday, February 23, at 10 oclock, a. m. High Mass was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. John Meurs, who as usual delivered a very touching and interesting sermon. Subject, Immortality of the soul and mortality of the body. A subject that the large number of people in the church paid the strictest attention to. There were over one hundred teams in the procession; they were there from far and near attending her funeral which testified to the high regard in which the deceased was held by all who knew her. She was a good christian, a kind mother, and her children will long remember their kind and loving mother who has passed away to that land whence none return. May she rest in peace.
