Obituary of
Catherine E. (Scanlon) Smyth
(1867 - 1896)

Catherine was the daughter of Michael J. and Mary (McDonnell) Scanlon, the eighth of their fourteen children. She was born on March 28, 1867 on the family farm in Seven Mile Creek, Juneau County, Wisconsin. She was the second of their children to be named Catherine, the first died in infancy in 1862. Kate married James Smyth, also of Wisconsin, in 1891. Kate's older brother John married a Julia Smyth, it is not known whether James and Julia were related. Catherine and James had two children, Leo E. born 1892 and Marie born 1893. James died soon after Marie's birth of tuberculosis, Catherine died two years later of the same disease. Leo and Marie were raised by Catherine's siblings. It does not appear the they were kept together. Census records indicate that Marie was primarily raised by Catherine's sister Agnes and her husband William Troy. The Troys were farmers in Kildare Township and only had one child, a daughter named Mary who was four and a half years younger than Marie. Leo is found living with a few different relatives, in 1900 with his newly married uncle William Scanlon and his wife in Minnesota, then in 1905 with his aunt Julia and her husband Andrew McIntyre on their farm in Lindina Township, WI. By 1910 Leo was also living with the Troys. In the early 1920's both siblings appear to have gone to Florida to live with their aunt Maria and her husband Jeremiah Foley and their four children. The Foleys had moved to Florida from Louisiana about 1919. Leo married in 1926 and appears to have lived the rest of his life in Florida. Marie returned to Wisconsin at some point, she did not marry.
