Tuesday, July 22, 1997SCANLON - Irene Scanlon died July 20, 1997. Born in Anoka, Minn. to William Edward and Mary Ann "Foley" Scanlon, she moved to Kentwood, LA graduating from Kentwood High School. She then moved to Madison, Wis. graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science degree. She received a Masters degree in Home Economics from Columbia University in New York City. Irene taught home economics and biology at Duval High, Andrew Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Vocational School and at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA. She volunteered for the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She was a board member of Catholic Hospital Association of America and Canada and the Diocesian Florida Deanery. She was past-president of All Saints Home for the Aged, the Motion Picture Council, St. Vincent's Hospital Auxiliary and St. Paul's Guild. Other memberships include, Saint Paul's Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Societies, Florida Yacht Club, San Joe Country Club, League of Women voters, Catholic Women's Club American Association of University Women. She was formerly the Catholic Director of U.S.O. and director of Women Civil Defense.
Survivors include M.T. Foley, cousins and other relatives. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 23, 1997 in Saint Paul's Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM Tuesday at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home, 729 S. Edgewood Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Catherine Laboure Manor, St. Vincent's Foundation or Saint Paul's Catholic Church.
