James William is the oldest Coursey/DeCoursey ancestor that there exists any real information on. He was the son of James and Hannah Coursey, who emigrated to Canada and then the United States from Ireland. In 1862 he and his wife Mary Murphy settled in Leavenworth County, Kansas, where he lived until his death. James is listed with both surnames because the family changed the spelling from Coursey to DeCoursey around 1890.
1 A guess based on age - he looks about 45 years old.
