Cincinnati, Ohio City Directory Entries
1853 - 1899

Surnames: Davis, Connelly, Kushman, McDonnell, Mullen, Rowan

The McDonnell family came to the US from County Galway, Ireland around 1850. By 1853 they had settled in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Following individuals through city directories of large cities in this time period can be quite difficult, particularily if they have a common name, because people who did not own their residence moved A LOT. Entries with question marks after them [???] are individuals whose identity I am unsure of.

The Cincinnati Public Library has a fabulous collection of directories online for free, spanning 1819-1941.

Michael J. Mullen dies on January 11, 1875, Thomas Rowan in March 1875. James C. McLaughlin left Covington to run the Buckeye on February 1, three weeks after Michael Mullen's death. The timing was good, as James had been running a hotel in Covington (the Clinton Hotel) that went bankrupt in September 1874.
1876 -McLAUGHLIN JAMES C., Buckeye Dining Rooms, 218 Vine; Residence, Price's Hill, 21st Ward
-Mullen Catherine, widow, h. 304 George
It appears Hannah Connelly moves to Ludlow, KY about 1875-6. She is found living there with her children in the June 1880 census.
1877 McDonald P. W. student, bds. 304 George [???]
-McDonnell Michael, h. 304 George
-McLAUGHLIN JAMES C., Proprietor Buckeye Dining Rooms, 218 Vine; Residence, Warsaw Pike nr. Toll-gate
-Mullen Kate, widow, h. 304 George
-Rowen Julia, widow, bds. 304 George
Michael Sr. is living with his widowed daughters Julia and Kate. I don't know who P.W. McDonald is. If he is a student he would have been born around 1850. Patrick did not have a son with a name starting with P. Could he be the son of James, possible unknown McDonnell child? It may of course also be that the surname is just a coincidence, that he is simply an unrelated boarder.
1878 McLaughlin James C., Proprietor Florentine Hotel and Restaurant, 216, 218 and 220 Vine; Residence, Warsaw Pike nr. Tollgate
-Mullen Kate, widow, h. 304 George.

1879 -McDonnell Michael, h. 304 George
-McLAUGHLIN JAMES C., Proprietor Florentine Hotel and Restaurant, 216, 218 and 220 Vine
-Mullen Kate, widow, h. 304 George
This Michael McDonnell is most likely Michael Sr, as son Michael J. is married and living in Carthage in the 1880 census. The 1880 census lists Michael Sr, living with daughter Julia Rowan in Cincinnati. Kate Mullen moved to Omaha, NE in late 1879 or early 1880, she is found living there with her children in the 1880 census (taken in June).
1880 -McLAUGHLIN JAMES C., Proprietor Florentine Hotel and Restaurant, 216, 218 and 220 Vine Both Michael McDonnell Sr. and his son Patrick die in July 1880. In September 1880 Michael J. McDonnell moves his family west, stopping first in Omaha, Nebraska, home of his sister Kate (McDonnell) Mullen. In the 1880 census Agnes McDonnell is living with her aunt & uncle James C. and Rebecca (Owens) McLaughlin. Her brothers John O. and Charles appear to be at St. Mary's Institute near Dayton, OH, a school for boys, now the University of Dayton.

This is the widow and children of Patrick, aside from John N.'s children and Julia (McDonnell) Rowan the only McDonnells left residing in Cincinnati. John's children are teenagers, too young to be listed in the directory.
1882 -McDonald Thos. h. 35 Ellen
-McDonnell John J. painter, h. 35 Ellen
-McLAUGHLIN JAS. C., Proprietor Florentine Hotel; Hotel and Restaurant, e. s. Vine b. 5th and 6th, opp. Grand Opera House; Residence, s.w.c. Warsaw Pike and Park Av., Price's Hill
-Rowan Julia, widow, h. 369 George
Again these are Patrick's children. Patrick's widow, Mary (nee Joyce), dies in September 1881. It appears Julia Rowan may have been living with John N.'s children, see 1883 listings. Patrick's daughter Mary is said to have become a nun, this could be why she isn't listed after 1881.

Frank Davis is the future husband of Julia McDonnell, daughter of Patrick & Mary (Joyce). John H. Kushman is the future husband of Agnes McDonnell, daughter of John N. and Mary (Owens). Frank and John H. are both living with their parents here. It now seems that the remaining McDonnells are all living under one roof, Agnes is John N.'s daughter, John and Julia are Patrick's children.
