Passenger List: McInerney, SS Baltic 1910

  back to passenger lists

SS Baltic sailing from Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland
on 21 Aug 1910, arriving in New York on 28 Aug 1910.

This list is written horizontally in the original, but to make it easier to view I have transcribed it vertically. "do" stands for "ditto", i.e. the same as the column to the left. The text was hand-written on the original.

Peter and Elizabeth were siblings of Ellen McInerney, the mother of Helen Clune, who married Vincent William DeCoursey. (Ellen emigrated from Ireland about the same time, but I have not been able to find an entry for her.) All of the McInerney siblings except for Martin emigrated to the United States between 1898 and 1910. Peter and Elizabeth were going to join their brother Patrick, a Roman Catholic priest in Kansas City who had come to the United States about 1898. Elizabeth later became Sister Mary Patrick in the Sisters of Charity order.

For some reason, there are two entries for Peter and Elizabeth in the ship manifest. The first is on page 4, and the second, which has been crossed out, is on page 11. There are several differences between the two entries. The first is the address of their brother Martin, who stayed in Ireland. In the entry on page 4, it is given as Barefield, and on page 11 his residence, as well as theirs, is listed as Ballymacahill. Ballymacahill is very close to Barefield, but is apparently much smaller- it is not listed on most maps. It is possible that they did live in Ballymacahill, but stated Barefield as it was more well known. Another difference between the two entries is Elizabeth's physical desription. My theory, based on the fact that Elizabeth is listed first in the page 4 entries and Peter is listed first on page 11, is that the person who is listed first gave the information, so unbeknownst to each other they gave the same information twice, and ended up with two entries on the list. I feel this theory is supported by the fact that Peter's physical description is the same in both entries, while Elizabeth's is different. Men aren't exactly known for noticing those kinds of details... :-)

An image of the original ship manifest and a picture of the ship are available at EllisIsland.org. In order to access the material you will have to register with the site, which is free. The manifests cover two pages each. The first entries are on page # 1006 and 1007. The second entries are on page # 1031 and 1032. In both cases the second page of the manifest is on the first page # (click on "next" to view the first page).
