Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa

Surnames: Carter, Coyle, Hughes, Murphy, Wickham

These are pictures of the tombstones of individuals connected to the Hughes family of Council Bluffs, Iowa. John Hughes, wife Kate their six daughters came to the United States from Ireland around 1868. They joined John's son from his first marriage, Martin, in Council Bluffs. Martin had emigrated to Upper Canada in about 1854. He remained there for 8 months, and then went to Des Moines, Iowa, where he stayed for about 2 years before moving to Council Bluffs. Martin married Mary Wickham, daughter of Patrick and Cecilia (Pryor) Wickham in May 1858. Mary, her mother and two of her brothers had come to Council Bluffs in early 1857. Her father and the rest of her siblings followed in 1858.

The half-sisters of Martin whose graves are pictured are Honora "Nora" (wife of Edward Murphy), Katherine "Kate" (wife of James Coyle), Mary (wife of Patrick Carter), and Anne (wife of John Coyle). It is not known where sisters Sarah (Hughes) Clair and Ellen (Hughes Hill Denney) Gleason are buried. Sarah and her family moved to Denver, Colorado around 1902, and very little is known about the life of Ellen.
