St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery
4500 Foley Road, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio
Surnames: Davis, Kushman, McDonnell, Mullen, Owens, Rowen
The McDonnell family, consisting of Michael and Mary (Needham) McDonnell and their eight grown children, left County Galway, Ireland for the United States about 1849. After living in New York for a short time, they settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Most of the children stayed and raised families in the area. Michael and Mary, along with five of their children and their families, are buried in this cemetery. Unfortunately there are no tombstones for Michael, Mary and several other family members who are known to be buried here. Whether there never were any stones, or they simply haven't survived, I do not know. These pictures are of the existing McDonnell tombstones, as well as those of families who are connected to the McDonnells through marriage. Individuals who are known to be buried in these plots through cemetery records are also listed.
The children of Michael and Mary who are not buried here are Bridget (McDonnell) Gilmore (place of burial unknown, probably Kentucky), Mary (McDonnell) Scanlon (buried in Wisconsin), and Michael J. McDonnell (buried in Washington or Oregon).

All of these plots, except for the Davis plot, are located in the same section of the cemetery. The three plots containing members of the McDonnell family and the Owens plot are next to each other, the Kushman plot is two rows (ranges) east. I have made a diagram showing the location of the plots. A map of the cemetery, showing the location of the NE Plat, is here. The NE Plat is divided into two sections. The McDonnell graves are located in the NE corner of one of them, I believe it is the one on the right but I'm not sure.
These pictures were taken by me in August 2004. A large thank you is owed to my Uncle Rick and Aunt Marcia for being such good sports about being dragged around a cemetery in 90 degree heat!
