Printers and Printer inks

Viola gave these comments:

Well when I scan to many pictures I use up to two containers of ink per month.  So needless to say I cut back on copying pictures as each ink jet costs ca $36.00 a piece.

And Jean Paytons response was this:

Well there is a way to save money on ink.  Go to Wal-Marts and get the
Universal Ink refills for your printer.  I have a Hewlett-Packard and I don't buy the new ink cartridges as I buy the universal and refill mine at home.  The black ink cost 14.95

And my Caveat was this:

Be very careful about the *universal* printer inks.  As some printers use an alcohol based ink and others use a water or glycol base, its impossible to make a universal ink that meets the specifications required for the printer.  As some printers probably do use the same base as the universal, they would work ok but others, you could ruin the printer heads or other parts of the printer.  Check the warranty on the package for the Universal kits.  If they specifically mention your printer and you feel comfortable using these, then go ahead, otherwise, you can locate inexpensive ink suppliers online that carry inks for your particular brand of printer.
