Using Print Screen

When I first learned about computers at work, we had this wonderfully, fantastic thing called "print screen".  It did just that, printed only the screen I was looking at because that's all I wanted.  If you can't do that anymore, why do I have this button that says "Print Screen/SysRq"?  What does it actually do, if anything, besides take up space on the keyboard?

The printscreen button now puts the image to the clipboard and you have to go another step to be able to print.  The image is a graphic and you need to paste it into a graphic program such as Irfanview from which you can print.  If you just press Printscreen, then you will get the entire monitor screen.  If you hold down the alt and press printscreen, you can get just the active window.  In either case, you need to paste it into another program in order to print.  There are some utilities that return the printscreen to the old Dos action, but I've not had too much success with them.
