Joel resided in Winnebago County most of his life coming from Ohio with his parents Joel W. and Emily (Mills) Thompson at the age of 2 years. Sarah also came to Winnebago County in her childhood. Five months after their marriage, Joel M. enlisted in the Civil War. At the close of the war, they moved to a farm east of Pecatonica where they lived until 1874 when they moved to Pecatonica. Joel M and Sarah observed their 70th wedding anniversary in 1931. They were also awarded a prize of the True Vowkeepers club a few years before in Freeport, IL. They have two children-- Edward and Villa
