Death Note: Obituary:
Mrs. L. Tompkins, 82, Dies in Byron
Byron - Mrs. La Fayette Tompkins (sic), 82 year old former Kalmar township resident, died early today at the home of her son, LeRoy Tompkins, at Byron. The former Mertie White was born in Othello township July 4, 1867 and was married to Mr. Tompkins October 5, 1892, at Byron.
The couple lived on a farm northwest of Byron for nearly fifty years. Mr. Tompkins passed away in 1939, and Mrs. Tompkins moved to her son's home in Byron in 1948 after suffering a stroke and a hip injury. She had lived with LeRoy since then.
Survivors include a twin sister, Mrs. Dan Quimby of St. Paul Park; a sister, Mrs. C.T. Webb of Mantorville; a daughter, Mrs. Frank Fox of New Athens, Ill. and three sons, Leon of Mantorville, and Clarence and LeRoy of Byron.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the LeRoy Tompkins home and at 2:30 at the Methodist church. Rev. John Agema will conduct the services and burial will be in the Byron Cemetery.

Individual Note: Origionally, I had a listing that showed Amelia as the wife of Walter Freeman Tompkins. From the substantiation by Donald Tompkins, the gravestone shows that Ameilia died at approximately 8 years old. Thereby, the marriage to Walter is incorrect.

Individual Note: It has been a family story that Charles' ancestor came over on the Mayflower. I found this information at the Mayflower Website. It may shed some light on the story.
(GEB) " Between 1620 and 1630 a "Mayflower," or "Mayflowers," crossed the seas three times. One in 1620 carried the Pilgrim Fathers to New Plymouth; one in 1629 carried Higginson's party to Salem; and one in 1630 carried Winthrop's party to Charlestown. It has generally been assumed that these three voyages were made by the same ship; but the strong probability is that the voyages of 1629 and 1630 were not made by the ship that sailed in 1620." According to Bowman the name Mayflower for ships was uncommonly common, with numerous ships of that name trading from numerous ports abroad.
There is not a Kay listed on the origional Mayflower Manifest. If the ancestor was female, it is impossible at this time to determine if she was a passenger on any of the listed voyages.
Death Note: Death date was in severe shadow. It APPEARS to be 1924 from an enlargment of the photo.
