"HEINRICH OTTO

Heinrich Otto, 1803-1887, his wife Katherine, and three children came here from Hanover, Germany. He first lived in Louisiana in 1834 where he manufactured cotton presses. In 1837 he moved to Franklin County, one of the early settlers. He was a carpenter and wagonmaker by trade. He bought a farm between Washington and Union. In November 1846 he was elected the Road Overseer of St. John's Township.

In 1858 he moved to Washington. Of their children, William Henry (1830-1891), lived in Washington and was a cabinetmaker. They started Otto & Co. Furniture Store and Funeral Home. Their other children were George H. who moved to St. Louis and Maria Elisa Fehrmann who lived in Hermann.

After Katherine's death in 1841, Heinrich married Catherine Maria Holtgrew in 1845. They had a daughter Julia Minnie who married Henry von Bargen.

William Henry married Catherine Baumann (1834-1913) who had come from Germany with her parents. Their children were William H. (settled in New Haven), Ed. H., Adelade Menzenworth, Millie Breckenkamp, George H., and Ida.

Ed. H. owned the Missouri Meerschaum Pipe Factory. He and his wife Litta Hoffmann had three sons, Robert, Edmund, and Carl J. George H. ran the furniture business and the funeral home. He married Pauline Kueckens. Their children were Esther Yaeger Busch, Walter H., Pauline Daugherty and Henry.

Of the next generation, Robert married Katrine Dallmeyer and had twins, Robert and William (St. Louis). Edmund married Barbara Kerns and had a daughter Barbara. Carl married Louisa Stephens and had one son Steve. Walter married Sarah Stucky and had two daughters, Sarah K. and Peggy. Pauline married Jim Daugherty and had two children, Danny and Jean (St. Louis). Henry married Mildred Breeden and had three children, Henry, Pauline and Douglas.

HENRY WILLIAM OTTO, JR. FAMILY

Henry "Skip" Otto is a lifelong resident of Washington. In 1958 he began working in the family business, and in 1978 became president of Otto & Co., Furniture Store and Funeral Home. He later owned Otto Funeral Home doing business as Cedar Valley Memorial Chapel. Skip is a member of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department.

He is married to Virginia Sieg Bruckerhoff, a native of Hermann, Missouri. They have two children. Heidi Elizabeth, June 16, 1978 and Melissa Ann, February 3, 1982. They attend Immanuel Christian Day School and the family worships at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

WALTER OTTO FAMILY

Walter Otto (1896-1973), the son of George H. and Pauline Kuechens Otto, was married to Sarah Stucky (1902-1984), daughter of Charles Christian and Bessie Heaton Stucky, Muncie, Indiana, July 17, 1925. Mrs. Otto had visited cousins often in Washington. They had two daughters, Sarah Kathryn, born August 29, 1934, and Peggy Jean, born February 22, 1937.

Mr. Otto was a descendant of an early Washington area family. He ran the furniture and funeral business begun by his great-grandfather and grandfather as well as a furniture business in Union. He was president of the Washington Savings and Loan Association for 30 years. He saw it grow from a drawer in his office desk to a major financial institution. He was on the Board of the Bank of Washington.

Walter Otto was thought of as a founding father because he was a charter member of the Franklin County Country Club, the Lion's Club and the Elk's Lodge. He was a president of the Library Board and Chamber of Commerce. He was on the Washington School Board, the Civic Industrial Corp. and the city council. .

Mrs. Otto is remembered as a gracious and busy hostess, golfer and a member of many Washington groups."

"Henry V. Bargen

Henry V. Bargen died at the home of his son near the Liberty school Sunday, July 6th. Mr. Bargen was born in Germany November 2, 1838. He came to America in 1853, and for several years resided at Washinton. In 1866 he married Wilhelmine Otto and to their union ten children were born. His wife passed away in 1916 and five children preceeded her in death. The surviving children are William Bargen of xxxxxx City, Mrs. Ida Drewel of Washington, Mrs. Cora Shadow of Shirley, Ark., Mrs. Pauline Hoemann of Casco and August Bargen of New Haven. Mr. Bargen is also survived by twenty-three grand chidlren, one great grand child and many other near relatives.

The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, having served three years and eight months in the army during that great conflict. Shortly after the war he made his home on a farm near Lyon where he resided until his death.

He was a man of strict integrity and xxxd the friendship of all who met him. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. F. Schmidt, pastor of the Port Hudson Lutheran church, and interment was in the Port Hudson Cemetery."

"WILLIAM HENRY BARGEN DIES

Passed Away Friday. Funerall Held Monday Afternoon.

William Henry Bargen of Leeders Bluff, near Edmonson, passed away Friday, October 13 at 11:13 o'clock at an age of 79 years, 9 months and 20 days. He had been ill the past two weeks.

Funeral services were held at the Eickhoff Funeral Chapel in Cole Camp at 1:00 o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. H. J. Gerike, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment was made in Union Cemetery South of Cole Camp.

Pallbearers were: August and Ocar Bargen, Kenneth and Owen Johnson, William Arnold and Edward Greer.

William Henry Bargen was born at Washington, Mo., on December 23, 1870, a son of the late Henry and Minnie Bargen. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His childhood was spent in Washington, Mo. He has resided in the Edmonson community since 1937, prior to coming here he resided in Kansas City and Washington. He was a landscape gardner.

On April 28, 1903 he united in marriage with Miss Edith Johnson. Two children were born to this union.

He is survived by his wife of the home; one daughter, Esther, Mrs. B. W. Martin of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Hoeman of Beaufort, Mo., and Mrs. Cora Schadeon of Oklahoma and one brother, August Bargen of Leslie, Mo."

" Bernard Lueckenhoff, a farmer and stock-raiser of Washington Township, Osage County, resides ten miles west of Linn, and was born in Prussia, Germany, May 25, 1825. His parents were Joseph and Elizabeth (Hulson) Lueckenhoff, also natives of Prussia. Joseph Lueckenhoff was born about 1782, and in 1838 immigrated to the United States with his family, locating in Osage County, Mo., where he was one of the pioneer settlers, and was engaged in farming until his death, which occurred in 1859. The mother of our subject was born about 1794, and died in Osage County, Mo., in 1840. Bernard Lueckenhoff is the only survivor of a family of ten children. After the death of his mother he lived with his father until about the year 1850, when he crossed the plains to California, and worked in gold mines about five years. He then returned to Osage County, Mo., and October 9, 1855, married Catharine Westerman, who was born in Osage County, Mo., November 23, 1837, and is a daughter of George and Gertrude Westerman, who were early settlers of Osage County, the former of whom died in 1859, and the latter in 1873. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lueckenhoff, of whom ten are now living, viz.: Anna (wife of Fred Meyer), Mary, Bernard, Chris­tina, Catherine (who married Benjamin Shaffer), John, Joseph, Lizzie, Jennie (died August 13, 1877), Willie (died February 9, 1876), Har­man, August and Dina (died February 10, 1879). Mr. Lueckenhoff located on his present farm in 1864. He owns 200 acres of land, about eighty acres of which are well improved and under cultivation, located on the banks of Osage River. He is one of the well-to­-do and highly respected farmers of the township. The family are members of the Catholic Church."

" Bernard Lueckenhoff, a farmer and stock-raiser of Washington Township, Osage County, resides ten miles west of Linn, and was born in Prussia, Germany, May 25, 1825. His parents were Joseph and Elizabeth (Hulson) Lueckenhoff, also natives of Prussia. Joseph Lueckenhoff was born about 1782, and in 1838 immigrated to the United States with his family, locating in Osage County, Mo., where he was one of the pioneer settlers, and was engaged in farming until his death, which occurred in 1859. The mother of our subject was born about 1794, and died in Osage County, Mo., in 1840. Bernard Lueckenhoff is the only survivor of a family of ten children. After the death of his mother he lived with his father until about the year 1850, when he crossed the plains to California, and worked in gold mines about five years. Carl Gelven was born in the Rhineland area of Germany c.1811 and married Agnes Thieves in Germany before coming to America.

The following children were born to this family at Rich Fountain, Mo. Carl (b. 2-9-1853), Jacob (b. 12-271849), Peter, Anna, Herman, and Joseph Gelven.

On October 28,1873, Peter Gelven married Margaret Luebbert at Rich Fountain. His parents were Jacob and Anna Maria Rosella Gelven. They lived at Freeburg.
Peter died on August 15,1827.

Another Gelven family was that of Peter and Elizabeth Plassmeyer Gelven. Their children were Carl (born and died in 1872); Carl (1873-1874); Maria Agnes (b. 1877); Maria Elizabeth (b. 1876), Anna Philomena (b. 1881), Gerhard (born and died 1884); and Hemietta (b. 1886).

Peter Hubert Gelven was born at Rich Fountain, Mo. on January 17, 1851. He was the son of Rhineland immigrants Jacob and Maria Rosella Gelven.

On October 28, 1873, Peter Gelven married Margaret Luebbert, daughter of Henry and Maria Luebbert, Rich Fountain. The following children were born of their marriage: 1) Anne Gelven (b. 1886) was single and died at Linn in 1958.
2) Frances Gelven married August Lueckenhoff.
They were central telephone operators at Freeburg, then Linn, and finally at Hillsboro, Mo.
3) Mary Gelven (b. 6-1-1881) married Albert Otten of Freeburg, Mo. She died there on May 17,1946.
4) Henry Gelven was single and died at Linn, Mo. in 1954.
5) Jacob ("Jake") Gelven married Myrtle Gelven and they lived in Oklahoma State.
6) Bernard ("Michael") Gelven (b. 10-26-1890) was single and he died at Freeburg, Mo. on February 14, 1960.

Peter H. Gelven died at Freeburg on August 15, 1927. His wife Margaret died on June 8, 1927."
