Places
New Brunswick
Miramichi, Northumberland County
Miramichi River at Nelson-Miramichi - I took this picture across the road from my grandmother's house, looking down the river. They were building the new bridge from Chatham Head to Newcastle at the time; if you look closely you can see the cranes. I think the picture was taken in 1998, when I was on the Miramichi for my grandmother's 90th birthday. |
Russell Tomb on Beaubears Island, Nelson-Miramichi, NB - I wrote a bit of a travelogue of Beaubears Island, for a truly gruesome website called The Asylum Eclectica, for their Morbid Tourist" section. (I'm not going to give a link because I mean it when I say that it's truly gruesome. You can look it up quite easily if you want, but don't even bother if you don't want to see very graphic images of stomach-turning subjects. You've been warned!) |
Miramichi River & Centennial Bridge, Chatham, NB - |
Miramichi River at Middle Island, Chatham, NB - This picture was taken just down the road a bit from my Aunt Elaine and Uncle Wally's house - they're lucky enough to see this beautiful view every morning! |
Barnettville, Northumberland County
The Spring at the Underhill Homestead - In July 2002, my son Liam and I visited the Underhill Homestead, built in the 1800's. This spring provided water for years, as well as cooling the dairy and flushing out the outhouse! |
The Underhill Homestead Barn - My son Liam, playing in front of the barn built by my great-great-grandfather, James Underhill and/or his father Noah, in 1850. This photo was taken in July 2002, the day before the barn was pulled down - it had become unsafe and rickety. |
Renous, Northumberland County
St. Bridget's Catholic Church - This is the original church, which was built in 1851, but was destroyed in a storm on August 14, 1911. The old cemetery is partially visible in the foreground. Construction of the new church (I have a photo somewhere, I will add it), commenced not too many years after that; the cornerstone is dated 1916. [This photo is not mine - I found it on the web. But now the only copy I can see anywhere is of really poor quality, so I posted this one. Hopefully it's not a problem...] |

Martin's River, Lunenburg County

Strum House - This house, which is painted red, is where my father lived for his first eight years, from 1940 to 1948. It belonged to his grandparents, Charles Dennis Langille and Ellen Amelia Strum, and had been in Ellen's family since 1839. The house may date as far back as 1835, when the land was owned by Joseph Langille, an ancestor of both Charles and Ellen. For more history on the house, read this excerpt from South Shore; Seasoned Timbers (Vol. 2) by the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia |
