John Elliott Obituary- from Family Bible

MR. JOHN ELLIOTT, who died in Goderich, on the 22nd inst., was born in the county Fermanagh, Ireland, near Enniskillen, in November 1810, emigrating in 1836. On the voyage across the ocean, which lasted thirteen weeks, the vessel was shipwrecked on the coast of Newfoundland, Mr. Elliott's father was among those drowned, and all the property they had being lost. Mr. Elliott thus being left with his mother and the other members of his family, a stranger in a strange land, and almost penniless. They came at once to the county of Huron, and on their arrival, after buying a barrel of flour there was only 50 cents left to the family, and rented a place on the 8th con. of Goderich township, known as the Gale farm, and remained there for four years. Mr. Elliott then settled on a farm on the 5th con., one mile south of Porter's Hill, where he continued to reside until about nine years ago, when he moved into Goderich to end his days. He was one of a family of two boys and three girls, the only one of whom is now living is Mrs. J. Thompson, of Bayfield (mother of Mr. Jas. Thompson, Clinton). His brother William, who was also one of the pioneers of Goderich township, died about three years ago. Mr. Elliott had six sons and four daughters. The sons being Gabriel (reeve of Goderich township,) Wm. and James, all living in the township, Thos. M. and Robert of Elliott, Dak., and John, of Dungannon. All his daughters are married, singularly two brothers in both instances marrying two sisters, the daughters being Mrs. Robt. and Mrs. John McLean, Goderich, and Mrs. John and Mrs. James Cox, Goderich township. For years he had been a faithful and earnest member of the Methodist church and died in the full assurance of faith. Although he had to struggle against tremendous difficulties when the country was new, yet he had the satisfaction of seeing all his family in comfortable circumstances. A touching ... connected with his death, was the presence of every member of his family but one, and the ability to converse with and recognize them before passing away. The day before his death, Rev. T. M. Campbell, in making a visit to him, asked if he had any fears for the future and received the joyous reply, "Oh, no, ... not desirous of living and have no fears of ... Christ is my Saviour." He always ... good health until September last, when he took congestion of the liver, never fully recovering therefrom. At the time of his death, he had attained the age of 75 years ... months. His funeral, on Wednesday ... largely attended, there being fully ... in the procession. The pall-bearers were Messrs. John Acheson, Capt. Gib... Beacom, John Anderson, Edward ... and Samuel Cox.

A few more years shall roll,
A few more seasons come;
And we shall be with those
Asleep within the tomb.

A few more struggles here,
A few more parting o'er
A few more toils, a few ...
And we shall weep no more.
