SEVENTH VICTIM EXPIRES OF WOUND ADMINISTERED BY FUGITIVE ON RAMPAGE London, Ky., January 10 (AP) Mrs. Lona Helton Jackson, 45 years old, shot yesterday in the murderous rampage of George Collett, died at Pennington Hospital here tonight. Mrs. Jacksons death tonight brought to eight the death toll in Colletts wholesale shootings early yesterday morning. Colletts wife, four members of her family, and a neighbor-couple, Mr. And Mrs. Julian Bordes, were shot fatally before Collett ended his own life. Funeral services for Mrs. Stella Helton Collett and the four others of the Helton family will be conducted tomorrow. Surviving Mrs. Jackson are her seven year old daughter, Violet, and her brother, Carlos, who was wounded slightly by Collett. Violet was the only member of the family to escape Colletts gunfire. Crab Orchard, Ky., January 10 (AP) The victims of an outlaws vengeance, Mr and Mrs Julian Bordes were buried here today after funeral services attended by state police. The slaying of the couple at their home near Brodhead yesterday was attributed by their son, Burgis Bordes, state policeman, to resentment of George Collett, former roadhouse proprietor, over the part the officer took in the hunt for Collett. Collett was sought by state police on several charges at the time he killed his wife and three of her family, Mr and Mrs Bordes, and himself. Mrs Lona Helton Jackson, a sister in law, who was wounded seriously, was reported slightly improved today at a London hospital. Bordes was a member of the Royal Arch Masonic Lodge No 140 and of the Masonic Blue Lodge. Hugh Moore, Danville, Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky, conducted the lodge rites at the grave. Brigadier General Ellerbe W Carter, Commissioner of the State Police, attended the funeral with other officers. General Carter said he would investigate an unofficial report that a companion of Collett charged with complicity in a bank robbery, might have been slain and buried behind Colletts home, known as Blue Heaven. State police found a recently used pick and shovel near the home. | |
