86. Josiah HOSKINSON (Isaiah HOSKINSON , James HOSKINSON , Thomas HOSKINSON , John , John ) was born in 1791 in , Montgomery County, Maryland. He died in 1852 in , Wapello County, Iowa. He was buried in near Chillicothe, Wapello County, Iowa.

Josiah Hoskinson apparently stayed with relatives in Virginia (West
Virginia in 1860). We find his marriage to Nancy Jane Howard on July 16, 1815
at Clarksburg, Virginia. He farmed about eight miles east of Clarksburg and,
we were told, raised a family of nine children, four boys and five girls. We
could only find records of three boys and two girls. Josiah and Nancy Jane
lived there for about twenty years and the entire family was born there.
In 1836 he loaded his goods in a wagon and driving his livestock he started
west. Benjamin was acquainted with a local girl and showed no inclination to
leave. On October 14, 1837, he married to Roseannah Holbert. Possibly some
of the girls were married also as we have no record of any children except
Josiah Jr, Jesse, Mary Jane and Mariah accompanying their parents. They
traveled over the same road as the father had taken earlier. This had now
become a heavily traveled thoroughfare and was called the "Cumberland Road".
We find that Josiah stopped at his father's place at least long enough to
sign a Power of Attorney to a lawyer to look after his interest in the
father's estate. He then moved down to Hocking County, Ohio to Pattonville
which was named for a neighbor Robert Patton. It was located in Harrison
County, Virginia, near Clarksburg.
It was there that Josiah Jr. married Nancy Patton in 1846. Josiah Sr.,
Mary Jane and Ben, his wife Roseannah and their children had moved from
Clarksburg and joined them at Pattonsville, Ohio (now Haydenville).
In 1849 the family again loaded up their belongs and driving their
livestock started for "greener pastures" in Iowa. Several of Isaiah's family
were in the group. They scattered out through Iowa, some moving to Adams
County, some to Taylor County, some to Monroe County, and Josiah Jr. and his
family to Wapello County near Chillicohthe, Iowa.
Here tragedy struck the family in the year 1852. Josiah Sr., his wife
Nancy Jane, two sons (Jesse and the name of the other one is unknowns),
Roseannah, the wife of Benjamin, and their daughter Jane all died within a
very short time from dysentery or some other contagious disease contracted
from the heavy influx of settlers.

Josiah married Nancy Jane HOWARD daughter of John HAWORTH on 16 Jul 1815 in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Virginia. Nancy was born in 1795 in , , Maryland. She died in 1852 in , Wapello County, Iowa. She was buried in Chillicothe, Wapello County, Iowa.

They had the following children:

+ 180 M i Benjamin HOSKINSON
+ 181 M ii Josiah HOSKINSON
182 M iii Jesse HOSKINSON was born in 1826 in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Virginia. He died in 1856.
183 F iv Mary Jane HOSKINSON was born in 1828 in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Virginia. She died about 1900. She was buried in Oskaloosa Cemetery, Jefferson County, Kansas.

Mary Jane Hoskinson married Avial Foster Fairchild (Uncle Foss) about 1850
in Wapello County, Iowa. We have been unable to get much information of them.
They seemed to be a family of blacksmiths. As far as we know, there were six
children, five of them born in Wapello County, Iowa, and the sixth in
Oskaloosa, Kansas. They moved from Iowa about the same time as Josiah Jr. but
stayed in Oskaloosa. They are both buried in the Oskaloosa Cemetery in
Jefferson County Kansas, and there are no markings on the graves. They died
in the early 1900s
Mary married Avial Foster FAIRCHILD. Avial was born about 1824 in , , Virginia.
184 F v Mariah HOSKINSON was born in 1830 in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Virginia. She died in 1864 in Cuba, Monroe County, Iowa. She was buried in Cuba Cemetery, Monroe County, Iowa.

Mariah Hoskinson, the youngest child, was married to Robert Johnson in
December 1850 and they had five children. They lived in Ringgold County Iowa
until he enlisted in the Civil War in 1861. He died in Kentucky on May 1
1863 and was buried there.
Mariah, with five small children to support, worked and starved herself to
death endeavoring to support the children. She died in 1864, and was buried
in the Cuba Cemetery at Cuba Iowa. Cuba was a small town in the eastern part
of Monroe County, Iowa.
Mariah married Robert JOHNSON in Dec 1850. Robert was born about 1826 in , , Virginia. He died on 1 May 1863 in the Civil War in Kentucky.

97. Thomas HOSKINS Sr. (John HOSKINS , Thomas HOSKINSON , Thomas HOSKINSON , John , John ) was born about 1768. He died in 1853 in , Harlan County, Kentucky.

BIRTH: 1830 Harlan Co census lists Thomas as between 60 and 70 years of age.
The same census indicates one female between 60 and 70, and one female between the age 20 and 30 and one male under 5 years of age. This would appear to be a daughter or servant with a young male child.

Date from 1850 Harlan Co census - age given as 82

This document is very difficult to read in places. It appears that the very first portion is to verify that the signature and seal match that at the bottom of the document. One surprising aspect of this deed is that everyone appears to have signed in their own name. No marks are indicated in the document. This deed was drawn up 28 Oct 1818 but was not recorded into the deed book until the following year on 7 Feb 1819.

Another key aspect of this document is that John and Ruth Hoskins signed the original deed of 28 Oct 1818 and John Hoskins signed again on 15 Jan 1819. It has been widely held that John and Ruth Lloyd Hoskins died in 1818 in Licking County, Ohio.

Thomas HOSKINS of Knox Co., Jan. 13, 1819 to Wm. SPURLOCK of same, for $300. 75 acr. at Hoskins Ford & Cumberland River. Signed Thomas & Anna HOSKINS; witness: Thomas HOSKINS Jr., Wm.Davis SPURLOCK & Jesse COSSEE. (deed pre-dates Harlan formation). [Harlan County deed book A p. 15] Note: This deed was transcribed showing that the wife of Thomas Hoskins was named Anna. Further research has indicated that her name was Ama rather than Anna.

Thomas married (1) Ama (HOSKINS). Ama was born about 1770.

They had the following children:

+ 185 F i Rachel HOSKINS
+ 186 M ii Thomas HOSKINS Jr.
+ 187 F iii Ruth HOSKINS Green
+ 188 M iv William Reilly HOSKINS
  189 F v Daughter HOSKINS was born in 1801/1810.

BIRTH: Census information from the 1810 Knox Co report lists Thomas Hoskins with two females under 10.
190 F vi Daughter HOSKINS was born in 1801/1810.

BIRTH: Census information from the 1810 Knox Co report lists Thomas Hoskins with two females under 10.

Thomas was not married (2) to Martha Patsy TAYLOR daughter of David TAYLOR and Mary BLEVINS. Martha was born in 1767 in , Orange County, Virginia. She died in 1856 in , Harlan County, Kentucky.

BIRTH: Date from 1850 Harlan Co census - age given as 83.

Although many Hoskins researchers hold that Martha Polly Taylor was the longtime wife of Thomas Hoskins, that appears to be incorrect. Martha Taylor married Robert DePriest. The following information is supplied by Joyce Taylor Collins.
Here is some information I have on Martha Patsy TAYLOR:
Husband: Robert DePRIEST
Born; November 5, 1763 in VA
Married: May 24, 1788 in Montgomery Co., VA
Died: August 6, 1839
Father; Randolph DePRIEST I
Mother: Mary MIMS
NOTE: Memorandum of an interview on file at the Nat. Archives in Washington D. C. with Mrs. Marcellus JORDAN MOSS (Sarah BINGHAM) by Dr. Robert L. KINCAID: "Grandfather, Robert DePRIEST, was with Washington's continental Army and was drum major at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown." Robert served 7 years in the American Revolutionary Army before his marriage to Martha Patsy TAYLOR. Sarah BINGHAM also stated that her grandmother, Martha Patsy, was born at "Hare Forest" at her grandfather's estate.

Robert DePRIEST applied for his pension in Claiborne Co., TN at the home of a brother-in-law, William McCARROLL. He was granted $98 a year until his death, August 6, 1839 in Harlan Co., KY. He is buried in the WOOLUM Cem., in Bell Co., KY.

Wife: Martha Patsy TAYLOR
Born: abt. 1768 in VA - - poss. at Wythe Co., VA
Died: July 30, 1856
FATHER: By tradition - David TAYLOR ???
MOTHER : By tradition - Mary M. BLEVINS ???
NOTE: Martha Patsy TAYLOR, b. abt. 1768 is said by many authorities and in personal pension testimony to have been born at "Hare Forest" in Orange Co., VA (presently Orange Co., VA). She died July 30, 1856 in Harlan Co., KY at her daughter, Mary BINGHAM's home on Straight Creek, now Bell Co., KY. On Nov. 10, 1853, from Harlan Co., KY, Martha Patsy TAYLOR DePRIEST applied for her widow's pension which she received, amount not legible for reading. Martha Patsy testified that she NEVER married after the death of Robert DePRIEST but did live with someone. I was aware they lived separately because at some point Robert DePRIEST is living in Claiborne Co., TN. She is buried beside her husband in Bell Co., KY. Only one known child, Mary DePRIEST.

[Note] It would appear from the Revolutionary War Widow's pension application that Martha Taylor lived with Thomas Hoskins at some point after the death of her husband, Robert DePriest in 1839. Therefore, I do not believe that she was the mother of the children of Thomas Hoskins.

In another reference to Marth Taylor DePriest, Carlo Brittain Hoskins related to his son C. Walter Hoskins in 1939:
(Nancy Mosley, mother of Henderson and Carlo B. Hoskins, later married widower Jordon Gross which is the family being discussed.)
They lived there (under the cliff) for a few months, when they moved down to banks of Straight Creek in a laurel patch at the Forks, known then as Bailey Fork. They lived in a new shack built for Jordon to teach a subscription
school. He taught there 2 or 3 months, when they moved to the head of Main Long Fork of Spruce Pine of Middle Fork at an old settlement (grown up in trees large enough for house logs). This old place was said to have been first occupied by Old Tom Hoskins, great Uncle to C B Hoskins (Uncle of John, Tom, Ezekiel and Josh). Old Tom had a brother named Reuben after whom Reuben Branch of Beech Fork was named. Old Tom had with him at this old settlement on Spruce Pine a woman by the name of Polly (De)Priest.

This hardly sounds like a reference to a long time wife.

99. John HOSKINS Jr. (John HOSKINS , Thomas HOSKINSON , Thomas HOSKINSON , John , John ) was born about 1775. He died after 1840 in , Clay County, Kentucky.

1810 Knox Co. census
HOSKINS, John, male, 26-45
. . Female, 26-45
. . Male, Under 10
. . Male, Under 10
. . Female, Under 10
. . Female, Under 10

John Hoskins Jr. had a large family according to the 1820 Census for Clay Co KY. Listed in his household in the 1820 census are: John Hoskins 4 2 0 0 1 0 - 2 2 1 1 0 - 0 - 0. The key for the census indicates 4 males under 10 and 2 males 10-16 and John as 26-45, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 16-25 and Nancy Stotts Hoskins 26-45.

In 1830 John was living in Clay Co KY and the census shows that there was 1 additional son born between 1820 and 1825 and one daughter born between 1820 and 1825. The total count appears to be 7 sons and at least 6 daughters. Three older sons are no longer living with John at this time.

A story was told that John Hoskins and John Fitz Patrick were out hunting cows and their dogs began to bay at something and they found three Indians hiding behind a log. The Indians attacked them and killed Fitz Patrick. John Hoskins ran to the top of the hill with the three Indians after him. Then John killed one and the other two ran.

John married Nancy STOTTS daughter of John STOTTS and Elizabeth. Nancy was born before 1779. She died after 1840 in , Clay County, Kentucky.

+ 192 M ii Ezekiel HOSKINS
+ 193 F iii Ruth HOSKINS

100. Ezekiel HOSKINS (John HOSKINS , Thomas HOSKINSON , Thomas HOSKINSON , John , John ) was born about 1776 in , , Virginia. He died in 1865 in , Harlan County, Kentucky.

Ezekiel Hoskins son of John and Ruth (Lloyd) Hoskins was born 1776 in North Carolina, (now Tennessee). John and Ruth were in Washington County, North Carolina at the time of Ezekiel's birth. In the 1850 Harlan Co. census Ezekiel states he is born in Virginia, he is 74 years of age at this time. This is possible and it also provides a clue where John and Ruth came from before coming to Washington County.
Ezekiel married Elizabeth Campbell, she was born 1781 in Russell County, Virginia, now Lee County. Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Catherine Campbell. James Campbell was a large land holder in Russell County. Ezekiel and Elizabeth received 88 acres of land as an inheritance from her father after his death. Ezekiel and Elizabeth sold this land to William Doherty of Lee County, Virginia on October 22nd, 1805. This date is interesting due to the year 1805, when John and Nancy (Stotts), Ezekiel and Jessie traveled to the Ohio River area. They received two hundred dollars for this 88 acres.
From 1804 until 1815 Ezekiel is missing from the census and tax records in Southeastern Kentucky. In 1815 Knox County, Ezekiel is charged by the Commonwealth of Kentucky of getting a child by Patsy Waldrup and the opinion of the court was that Ezekiel pay eighty dollars for the maintaining of said bastard child, that he pay annually the sum of 12 dollars per year until the $84.00 is paid up.
In the year 1826, 23rd of October, John and Nancy (Stotts) Hoskins sold fifty acres of land on Straight Creek in Harlan County to Ezekiel Hoskins for the sum of seventy dollars. What is interesting about this land sale is the
date, for a fact that John and Nancy are still living in Harlan County.

Ezekiel married Elizabeth CAMPBELL daughter of James CAMPBELL and Catherine. Elizabeth was born in 1781 in , Russell County, Virginia. She died in 1876 in , Bell County, Kentucky.

BIRTH: Age in the 1870 Bell Co census given as 86.

Ezekiel and Elizabeth had the following children:

+ 199 M i Hiram HOSKINS
+ 200 M ii James K. HOSKINS
201 F iii Sarah A. HOSKINS "Sally" was born about 1813.

George married Nancy KILGORE ?. Nancy was born 1 about 1778. She died in 1860 in , Lee County, Virginia. She was buried in Old Hoskins Cemetery, Lee County, Virginia.

In a bit of speculation about Nancy's surname, daughter Lucinda Hoskins married Thomas Grimes. They named a son Robert Kilgore Grimes. Nancy was listed as living near Lewis and Esther Kilgore Green during the 1810 Knox Co., Kentucky census. Following naming conventions of the time, it would be conceivable that Lucinda Hoskins Grimes would name a son after her maternal grandfather. Is Nancy a daughter of Robert Kilgore Sr. and Winifred Clayton? Was she possibly raised by Esther Kilgore Green?
