William Keller Napier Hoskins was born March 6, 1830 at Mount Pleasant, Harlan Co., KY. William and his brothers were very close to Frankey's brother, Joshua, and his family. William, the oldest of the four boys, lived with his mother in August 1850 in Clay Co., KY where he worked in a mine. His first wife, Mary Polly Roberts, lived in the home of her parents, Thomas Boone and Nancy (Bowling/Bolling) Roberts.
William Keller (Napier) Hoskins knew his father, James Napier, well since he was the eldest and the relationship was fully known to his children and grandchildren who have always known that they were really Napiers.
William Keller Hoskins lived with his mother in August 1850 in Clay Co., KY where he worked in a mine. His first wife, Mary Polly Roberts, lived in the home of her parents, Thomas Boone and Nancy (Bowling/Bolling) Roberts. She and William had six children. She died April 8, 1862 of measles while William was gone serving in the Civil war.William joined Company E, 7th Kentucky Infantry on Feb. 22, 1862, transferring to Company D where he served until February 9, 1865. Evidence of William Keller Hoskins' military service is available. The Department of Interior issued his pension on October 7, 1897 in which he lists all four of his previous wives and his children (8 boys; 15 girls). In this he certifies that he has 6 living children by his first wife who died April 8, 1862, 9 by his second wife whom he divorced, 4 by his third whom he divorced, and 2 by his fourth wife whom he left as a young widow.
He was at the First Battle of Manassas under General Grant, on April 6, 1862 two days before his wife died. He apparently received word of her death in late July 1862 since his attendance record show him present in May, June, July of 1862, but whereabouts unknown in August 1862. His six small children were left alone, being cared for by a neighbor woman, Sally Jones, an old maid school teacher who would later become his second wife. He is recorded sick at Cumberland Gap September and October 1862 where he is reported present until mustering out on February 9, 1865. Details of his military career are on file and many family members have copies of the original documents.
William's physical description on his pension application is: height - 6'2", complexion - florid, blue eyes, hair dark...... disputed by a fellow researcher who replies "my grandmother says that his hair was red". William was a stylish man, wore nice clothes, and rode a big white horse. Loved his children. Pictures of him in his later years show him with a full, neatly trimmed beard and a full head of hair.
William was a farmer in Kentucky until 1891 when he moved to Madison Co., AR. where he became a large landowner and employing about 40 people in a general store and sawmill business making barrel staves, single and double-trees, and lumber. He lived in a large two-story house, referred to in probate records as a mansion, with a curved stairway with the rooms painted different colors and referred to as "the blue room, the yellow room, etc."
William died January 26, 1911 in Witter, Madison Co., AR and is buried in Capt. Smith's Cemetery in Witter where he has a military gravestone. He did not leave a will and the resulting division of the property left the family unhappy, divided, and in court.

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Polly Roberts was the first wife of William Keller Hoskins; she died two days (April 8, 1862) after the First Battle of Manassas where William was fighting. She suffered the sometimes deadly disease of German measles, while living alone with six small children. Early in their marriage she had lived with her parents while William lived with his mother while he worked in a Clay Co., KY mine.

Nancy put in for her dower rights and got the home place where they had lived. She later moved to Davenport, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma where she died in 1930. She is buried in the Davenport Cemetery.

Sometime between 1880 and 1900, Hugh apparently died, before or by 1900 Rachel decided to move back to Clay Co. Rachel is asked several questions about her family, she stated indirectly to this inquiry that she was born December 1846 and she was 53 years of age. She also stated that she is widowed and all five of her children are living. She names their children and grand-children; there was Rutha, born August 1874, and although Rutha is single she has two children, Malory, grand-daughter of Rachel age 7, born November 1892, and a grand-son Anderson, just born in December 1899. Rachel also has another daughter, Adeline, born January 1874, age 26,
and a son Isham who is 22 years of age, born January 1878 . Twenty years earlier, Hugh gave Adeline and Isham's age as being twins.
Ten years later Rachel is still living in Clay Co., with her daughter Rutha. Rutha is still single, but now she has five children, grand-children Otto Hugh and Rachel. They are Malory, female age 16, Anderson age 10, a son
Lawarence age 7, Rebecca age 5 and a son Luther age 5. Apparently Rutha had twins also.
