Ive decided to clean off my desk. Im cleaning off my extra chair too. While Im at it, Im getting rid of that pile of stuff behind my chair.
These piles are getting too high and they keep falling over! Im afraid Im going to injure myself! I pull things out of the closet because I'm going to put them on the web or submit them to a web site and somehow something else takes priority and they get buried.
Today is the first day of the end of this mess!! Now I can put them here and once they're here, I can put them away forever! (mostly)
Laugh if you must, but I KNOW your office looks as bad as mine, unless, of course, you are one of those obsessive-compulsive types! And we all KNOW that obsessive-compulsives dont even know who their great-grandparents are, because they threw out their birth certificates while eliminating the clutter in grandpas attic!
I know there are people who claim to do genealogy, but they don't own any piles! I ask you, how can they be building a pedigree without piles? Where is the paperwork? I have seen this done before by the collectors. You know who Im talking about; those folks who start with nothing and a few years later they are related to EVERYBODY! If you'd like to see my husbands pedigree, you can click here. This woman is my husbands fifth cousin. Yeah, I know thats stretching it a bit, but apparently there was something about our files that she liked! Of course, she missed out on the documentation for our data by never writing back. Shes included our entire Lewis gedcom, but youd never know it because she can't remember where she got my name from! (I checked her notes just to see.)
If you're really interested in eliminating the piles from your desk, try her method. On the other hand, if youve spent years collecting census records, deeds, wills, marriage certificates, etc. and they are creating chaos in your research ability, get your FREEPAGES at RootsWeb and do what I did!
Im starting with the things that have been sitting out the longest. Most of the items posted on this site pertain to Illinois or Nebraska folks. I do hope you find something useful here.
