Zebulon and Betsy Lamphear   (Updated December 31, 2001)

Zebulon Lamphear and Elizabeth (Betsy) Hier were both born in Vermont.  Zebulon's family is listed as being Scotch Irish and his parents are unknown. Betsey’s parents were Justus and Elizabeth Hier.  View Photo of Zebulon and Betsy Lamphear

Zebulon and Betsy were married around 1833 and had their first two children, Lorinda and George in Vermont. Sometime between 1836 and 1840 the family moved to Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. Zebulon and Betsey had the rest of their children in or near Canton. Around 1853  the family moved to Lind Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  Zebulon also owned land in Waushara County in the town of Poysippi.

Although Zebulon was primarily a farmer, during the Civil war he raised horses and sold them to the Army.

Zebulon LAMPHEAR was born on 14 September 1810[?] in Vermont. He married Elizabeth HIER,  around 1833 in Vermont (Betsy was born on October 29, 1814 in Vermont). He died on 19 March 1893 in Hatton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin at age 82 per his obituary.. He was buried in Hatton Cemetery, Hatton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

Zebulon and Betsey had eleven children:

  1. Lorinda Lamphear. Born April 12, 1834 in Vermont [probably Middlesbury, Addison County]. Married Griffin Smith on December 4, 1854 in Wautoma, Waushara County, Wisconsin. Her second marriage was to Caleb Harris on July 12, 1868. Her third marriage was to Nathan Howard on April 8, 1884. Died: December 2, 1906 in Lanark Township, Portage County, Wisconsin. Buried: Sheridan Cemetery in Farmington, Wisconsin.

  2. George Lamphear. Born: October 3, 1836 in Vermont. He married Mary Ann GILL on October 24, 1857 in Lind Township, Waupaca, Wisconsin. Mary's parents were John and Irina GILL Sr.   He died at the age of 75 on January 28, 1911, Enterprise District, 8pm, Carl Junction, Jasper County, Missouri. George was buried on January 29, 1911 in Carl Junction Cemetery, Jasper County, Missouri.    Information provided by Census Records, estate records of George B. N.   3. Laura Lamphear. Born: April 1, 1838 in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. She married Richard J. WOOLSEY, son of Joseph WOOLSEY and Mehitabel BROWN on November 18, 1856 in Lind, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Laura died July 24, 1922 in Lind and is buried in the Lind Cemetery, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  Information provided by Marilyn Marquard, Newspaper articles, Town Histories and Vital Records.

  4. Lyman Lamphear. Born: March 1840 in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. Married: Clara May TEW on May 17, 1871. He died in August 14, 1914 at the age of 74, and is buried in the Janesville Cemetery at Janesville, Minnesota.

  5. Hannah Lamphear. Born: 1842 in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. Married: William F. WARNER around 1862 and died sometime around 1893, possibly in Lebanon, Kansas.  Information provided by Census Records and Estate records of George B. N. Lamphear.

  6. Justus Lamphear. Born: November 1844 (a twin to Chester) in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. He married Martha WESTOVER, daughter or John M. WESTOVER and Ellenore GILL, on August 23, 1892 in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. Justin died at the age of 81 in Northern Wisconsin on April 9, 1926 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wisconsin.      Information provided by Census Records, Jack Disbrow, Sharon Syvertson and Dorothy Sternberg.

  7. Chester Lamphear. Born: November 1844 (a twin to Justus) in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. Married: Nellie [Rivers?] around 1885. He died on April 4 1931 in Hayward, Wisconsin at the age of 86.  Information provided by Census Records and the estate papers of George B. N. Lamphear

  8. Eveline Lamphear. Born: 1847 in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. She married Phillip Waterson.  Eveline died on June 10, 1929 in Amhurst, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  She was buried in Hatton Cemetery, Lind Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

  9. Henry Lamphear. Born: January 1848 in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. He was unable to care for himself, never married and remained in the care of his parents, siblings and eventually the County of Waupaca. He died on February 21, 1922 at the age of 73 in the Poor House, Lind Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  Possibly buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Weyauwega, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  Information provided by Census Records and Court Records

  10. Loren Lamphear Born: April 27, 1850 in Canton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. Loren married Elizabeth (Betsy) A. CHAMBERS on June 28, 1874 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Elizabeth was the daughter of William A. CHAMBERS and Sara GILL.  He died May 14, 1918 at the age of 68 in Friendship, Adams County, Wisconsin of Cancer of Polaris, unable to take food.. He was buried May 17, 1918 in "Dane" Cemetery [Niebull Cemetery], Big Flats Township, Adams County, Wisconsin.   Information provided by Census Records, Court Records, Vital Records of Waupaca and Adams County, Wisconsin, Jeanne Loomis, Jack Disbrow, Cemetery Records and Kim Ledbetter.

  11. William W. Lamphear Born: October 31, 1853 in Postsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. He married Anna C. KNUTSON, daughter of Andrew KNUTSON and Carrie Katherine SORENSON on March 4, 1889 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.
